The Just is somewhat Bottled by
the recent showers.
They are on the hot track of a
gold mine near town.
Hamiltoniaas are staining their
lips with dewberries.
Fletch Johnston, a former citizen
of Hamilton, was iu town a lew days
since.
The venerable Dr. Lovic Pierce
preached at the Methodist church
last Sunday.
Who is the young niau that came
60 near swallowing a frog iu a gourd
of water the other night?
The rain last Sunday evening was
jnst in time to rescue our gardens
from cremation.
Mr. Jno. Pearce was thrown from
his horse in towu last week, and se
riously hurt. .
Kingsboro has been the scene of
not less than a half dozen picnics
within the past few weeks, and an
other one to morrow.
Last Tuesday was sale day, but
nothing was sold. They have become
merely nominal in Hamilton.
Ou account of a rain Sunday even
ing, no Bible class nor lecture by
Capt. Stanford, which appointment,
we presume, will stand for next Sun
day.
A negro girl on Judge Willis
Jones’ place, to get rid of the onerous
duty of nursing another of 18 months,
threw it into a well and drowned it.
At least, the circumstantial evidence
is strong against her.
Jas. Bowen, imprisoned for decoy
ing Maj. Ellison’s mule, was brought
before Judge Williams last Monday
on a writ of habeas corpus, but in de
fault of bail was returned to jail.
Two men, not on the friendliest
terms, met iu town, when one accos
ted the other with, “ You are a cross
eyed thief!” With much surprise
the other responded: “Py shiminy,
is dot so ? ”
At the exercises of Prof. La Ilatte’s
school, last Friday evening, the boys
acquitted themselves very creditably
in recitations, compositions and de
claiming, after which Rev. G. S.
Johnston addressed them in a short
speech of five minutes. Quite a good
audience greeted them.
There lives within the limits of
Hamilton a man who is at work on a
flying machine. Says, when, he com
pletes it, he can fly to Columbus
within 15 minutes, and to New York
in a day. In short, it will equal the
speed of a carrier dove.
Mr. Jno. F. Jenkins, of Good
man’s district, rejjpirts crops as look
ing well, not only in Iris district, but
all along the road between his house
and West Point. Corn is a little
backward. Farmers are well up with
their work. Wheat crop*larger and
looking belter than it has done for a
year or two past. Several farmers
began cutting it this week.
Mr. J., reports a 6trong wind at
his house last Sunday evening—suffi
cient to blow down a portion of his
garden fence.
Toenadoeb and Babies . —We will
back Harris against any county in.
the State for cyclones and babies.
The wife of a respected farmer near
Marshall <fc Stanford’s mill recently
gave birth to twins —both girls.
The parties have been married seven
years and a half, and this last addi—

of six children, all vigorous and
healthy.
We learn that Dr. H. K. Stanfrjp,
the physician in attendance, in v w
of the father being a poor man,, m ide
no charge for his services.
Cbops. —lf our planting friends
generally will send us a short state
ment of the condition of the crops, it
will enable us to give a pretty cor
rect account of the 6tate of the crops
in the county.
Cataula Reporter’s Locals.
Harvest time has come aud we
stand ready to receive an invitation
to the reapings.
-'to
During the month of May, there
were ten pieuics within a few miles
of Cataula.
Unci* Needham says “the fact of
the busitees is, Billy Hudson has got
a humiliating sight of land.”
Mrs. Harvey Lynch carried some
very fine cucumbers to the picnic
Saturday—the test we have seen this
spring.
If everybody could make corn
bread like that scut to the picnic by
Mrs. Biggers, wo verily beliovo the
corn crop would be larger.
An unprecedented gtol stand of
cotton has been obtained, and the
plant is looking well. Corn is small,
and has suffered for want of rain.
The Ceres of Cataula Grange sent
the towu local a large silver cake and
a jar of pickles, but he was not at the
picnic, and we take pleasure iu in
forming him that it was as nice as
we ever ate.
No preaching iu the neighborhood
last Sabbath, and the young folk im
proved the opportunity, and held a
singing at “ Pine Knot.”
Ye local is under many obligations
to the “ belle of Harris,” the “ charm
of Cataula,” aud the “shilling light of
Box Springs” for the beautiful ilow
ers. They were highly appreciated,
and w e humbly aud gratefully raise
our hat.
Maj. McLeroy saw a loggerhead
turtle- floating down Mulberry, with
two buzzards sitting ou the carcass.
Ho supposed it would weigh 100 lbs.
A refreshing shower would afford
the farmers here as much pleasure as
the death of a fat man would the cit
izens of Rhode Island.
Messrs, Jenkins, Greer and Wil
liams were iu our midst last Saturday.
It was not the boys, but tbe young
ladies that accompanied them, that
made our feeble heart beat with a
high degree of pleasure.
Mr. Jas. Passmore lost one of his
best mules last Tuesday—died from
an over-feed of green forage. This is
ihe second mule that our neighbor
has lost recently, aud he has our sym
pa by.
Our young friend Henry Jewett is
not a large young man, hut it lakes a
large boat for him. A boat that
would ordinarily carry eight or
ten persons, was only large enough
for him and a young lady last Satur
day. Come to think, iltakes a pretty
good boat for our friend Hudson too
—he thinkß more than two iu a boat
is dangerous.
E. B. Gatnmell, E<q., lost bis fine
bay colt last week. In lain he strove
to think his gentle life would linger
amid earthly flow ers, hut death culled,
and “Greeley” went.- Thus many
pleasant rides are knocked iu air.
“ Such is life! ”
The number of letters and packa

try the patience of a Job, yet Capt.
Fout Grimes will take them. He is
unquestionably one of most accom
modating conductors we have ever
met, and he is as polite to ladies as
he is accommodating to gentlemen.
And now the E. R., of Ellerslie,
dubs him Col. Jenkins. Of ccurse
this is all right, since there were no
privates in the late struggle for inde
pendence, but we don’t like for the
readers of the Visitor to think our
venerable friend has attained the
“ digriitate officio ” of “ Colonel/’ and
still hugging the delusive' phaDtom
of bacheloric freedom. However,
we don’t blame you much ; we would
call a man most anything for a big
dinner.
Wheat fob News. —Those farm

the Visitor, but didn’t have the money,
can pay us in new wheat, for which
we will give the highest market price.

Foster’s Texas Beal Estate Dis

as to the reliability of the Texas lieal

not personally acquainted with the
manager, Capt. Foster, uui the news
papers of Texas, where Lt is well
known, it appears, speak of him in
high praise—endorsing h'.rn as an
honorable, reliable and successful
business man. He is also endorsed
by the mayor and council of Houston,
and his business relations with this
paper are of a prompt and reliable
nature.
Ellerslie Reporter’s Locals.
We are afraid that if some of the
Box Springs boys don’t quit going to
tbe piney woods they will turn to a
gopher-her.
A party of young people passed
through our village last Monday mor
ning. They were en route for their
homes. They must have had a nice
time at the picnic.
The marrying fever has been rag
ing iu our neighborhood for a long
time. Our old chum says he had a
violent attack, w hich lasted about
five years, hut. has almost recovered
since the death of the other party by
the same fever.
We have not had a refreshing
shower of rain in four weeks.
Our farmers say that the spring
oat crop will be a complete failure if
it doesu’t ruin soon.
Master Homer Willi is, a little son
of E. P. Willis, Esq., had his arm
broken last Monday morning. He
was suffering a great deal when
heard from last. He foil from a tree.
liev. J. S. Searcy will deliver a
temperance lecture in the academy,
on Saturday, the 12th inst„ at 7
o’clock, p. jr. Come out and see him;
you will never regret it.
Our old churn has just returned
from a visit in Talbot county, lie
reports crops iu a flourishing condi
tion. He also reports that a fine rain
fell in the neighborhood of Baugh
ville last Sunday evening.
Cash and Crudit.—Bull: meat is
selling in Hamilton for 14 cents cash,
or eighteen on time; corn iu worth
$1.35 cash, or $1.75 on time.
The usury law enacted by the last
legislature only allows 12 per cent
interest; but what does the all-cot
ton farmer care for that? He is
obliged to have bread and meat, and
is glad to get it at any price.

Goodman Grange. —We learn that
the Patrons of Husbandry have erec
ted a hall in the grove adjoining the
residence of Mr. Jno. F. Jenkins.
The building is sufficiently completed
to hold the regular meetings in, aud
will be finished this summer. It is a
two-story house, with a store under
neath, aud when fully completed, will
be quite neat and commodious. The
members of this grauge deserve credit
for their enterprise. The grange is
i in a prosperous condition, and meet
ings are held twice a month.

confined in these prison walls, I must,
through the assistance of your type,
return thanks for the kindness and
sympathy rendered me by Mrs. S.
Storey, a worthy lady of your town,
and a native of ihe “Old Dominion.”
When my prison doors were thrown
open on Sunday, at 12 o’clock, I was
met w ith a waiter of dinner consist

and bread, to say nothing of the hon
ey, butter, milk, cake and liglnbread
—the w hole accompanied by. a hunch
of sweet flow ers, composed of pinks,
roses and others, looking bright.
May the path of this good ladv
ever be strewed with such like, and
may she be happy and prosperous in
life’s journey. And when she has
discharged her duties here on earth,
may she go in peace to the grave with
