X. Word to Fitf.Tin s.
Nerer keep vour cattle short, for
you can’t aff >rd it. If you starve
them they will starve you; besides,
it is wicked. Be nwreiful to your
beast.
Never hoe a great field for a little
<m3p,-Tr mow twenty acres for five
loads of hay. You can’t afford it.
Enrich your land and it will pay
you richly.
Take care of your tools, spades,
shovels, rakes, hoc, pitchforks, etc.,
etc;; keep them house.! when not in
use.
Above all things, cultivate your
heart as well as your soil; “ whatso
ever anoan soweth Unit diitll he also
reap.”
Keep notes of all the remarkable
events.
Never build a spacious barn till
you have somethintr'to put in it.
Good fences will always make you
good tvEghbors.
Cows fed well in the winter, give
more milk in summer.
Fon Nkhvoi's Complaints.— The
following is said to be an excellent
remedy for rheumatism, neuralgia,
sick headache and other nervous pains:
1 ox. rosemary, 1 oz. spirits tur
pentine, 1 07,. spirits ammonia, Ifez
tincture cantharides, 1 o 7„ alcohol.
Mix in bottle with glass stopper, and
shake liefero using. Heat a -saucer
on embers, pour a little in saucer, and
rub it on the paTt affected with your
liand previously w3rined by tho fire,
so as to encourage absorption.
Kkkp Your Fkbt Warm.—To
keep those extremities warm is to ef
fect an insurance against the almost
interminable list of disorders which
spring out of a “ slight cold.” First,
never be tightly shod. Hoots or
shoes, when they fit closely, press
against the foot, and prevent the free
circulation of the blood. When, on
Ihe contrary, they do not embrace the
the foot too tightly, ths blood gels
fair play, and the spaces left between
the leather and stockings aro filled
with a comfortable snpply of warm
air. The second rule is, never sit in
damp shoos. It is often imagined,
that unless they are positively wet, it
is not necessary to change them while
the foot are at rest. This is a fallacy;
for when the least dampness is a!>-
sorbed into the sole, it is attracted
further to the foot itself by its own
heat, and thus perspire dangerously
checked. Any person may prove this
by trying the experiment of breaking
the rule, and his feet will become
cold and damp; after a few moments,
taking off the shoo and rubbing it, it
will appear quite dry.
Facts for Farmers.— lt will not
do to hoe a great field for a little
crop, or to mow twenty acres for five
loads of hay. Knrich the land and it
will pay you for it. Hotter farm
thirty acres well than fifty by halvos.
Accounts should l>o kept in detail
of the expenses and product of each
field.
When an implement is no longer
wanted for the season, lay it carefully
aside, but first let it he well cleaned.
Obtain good seed. Prepare your
ground well, sow early, and pay very
little attention to tho moon.
Cultivate your own heart aright;
remember that “ whatsoever a man
soweth that shall he also reap.”
Do not begin farming by building
an extensive hoi -e, nor a spacious
barn until you have something to
store in it.
Keep notice of remarkable event*
on your farm.
rr sp rigs of winiergreen or of
ground ivy will drive away red ants;
branches of wormwood will serve the
same purpose for black ants.
A teaspoouful of powdered
borax dissolved in a quart, of tepid
water is good for cleaning old black
dresses of silk, cashmere or alpaca.
Straw matting should ho
washed with a cloth dampened in
salt water. Indian meal sprinkled
over it and thoroughly swept out will
also clean it finely.
Fon a Cold.—Put six eggs, nine
of sugar, and six small
glasses of marsala into a vessel over
the fire, and keep it rapidly stirred
until it begins to rise. Then serve
it up in glasses.
To Bleach Stkaw Hats. —Wash
them in pure water, and then put
them into a box with burning sul
phur. The fume* arising unite with
the water on the bonnets, and this
sulphurous acid thus made bleaches
them. 0
Kerosene and powdered lime,
• whiting or wood ashes will scour tin*
w ith the least labor.
