w e announce the death of Shade
Pritchard with sorrow. “Old Shade”
as he was called, was a remarkable
negro. Aside from his excessive
fondness for whisky, ho had some
good trails. He was above that mean
class of negroes whose highest ambi
tion is to steal and traduce white
folks. lie never allowed the Yankees
to estrange him from the whites.
He stuck to them, and always voted
the democratic ticket.
We attended the Cat aula oanip
meeting last Sunday. A pretty good
crowd were out. Saw many old ac
quaintances. Among them Mr. Al
phens Luit, at whose tent we took
dinner, and Dr. C ameron, a former
citizen of Hamilton. He is an enthu
siastic temperance man, and now is
preaching for the cause. He lias
been unfortunate. His house was
burned with everything ho possessed,
and we commend him to the charity
of the good people.
—— #
Jjg? - The meeting at the Metho
dist church closed last Sunday. It
was one of the most powertul and
interesting we ever attended, and
the interest was still great at the
close. The services last Sunday
were very affecting and impressive.
In the morning, Kev. George S.
Johnston, the zealous pastor, preached
a sermon to the young converts —the
house being crowded from pulpit to
back door. In the afternoon the sac
rament was administered to the
vonng folks, and some of them arose
and testified to their love for the Sa-
violir.
Tlie meeting continued eleven dnys,
nnd resulted in forty accessions lo
the church.
We learn that another “' lies of
meetings will be commenced in a few
weeks.

As Col. Williams and Maj. Deer
ham were on their way to the camp
meeting, they were driving along ett
gaged in earne-t conversation about
for dogs, took the wrong road and
went as far as Johnston's mill before
they were aware that they were four
miles out of the way. The Major was
the first to find ib out. The Colonel
would very likely have go e a mile
or two further up the road.
An unfortunate affair occured at
the Catania camp-ground last Sunday
evening. A negro named Dick
Green, who had been drinking, cursed
and struck at Mr. Joe Hargett, who
cut iiini very seriously in the back.
From tlie information received it ap
pears that Mr. 11. was not at all to
blame. Dr, Cameron informs us
that the cut is severe, and may prove
fatal.
Wo thank the Blue Spring editor
for his compliment, and feel honored
at the suggestion of a treaty. By the
way, we were not aware that we were
shooting at a small target. His col
umn don’t suggest that idea at all.
We have seldom if ever read any
thing possessed of more touching
simplicity and sweetness than the
lines “ My Birds,” which appeared in
the last Visitor. They portray the
heart of a true woman, and none but
a Christian mother could ever have
presented such beautiful ideas.
One of tlie most beautiful scenes
we ever witnessed was an assembly
of ladies, away oftt in the woods
upon their knees, praying God’s bles
sing upon His church, and petitioning
to a throne of Grace that He would
touch the heart, and blot out the sins
of their husbands, brothers and
friends. If ever fondest prayer avail
ed on High, surely theirs will, not be
lost, but many names be wafted be
yond tli'.* skies, and written in tlie
Lamb’s book of life.
C. 11. Williams, Esq., the talented
voting editor of tlie Columbus ’limes,
wan in attendance at Knigsborougb
last Thursday. Mr. Williams is a
splendi 1 and fearless writer for one
of the best and most, reliable papers
in the (Slate. Few papers have ever
attained a more enviable reputation
in so short a time, and we think it
every way worthy of the liberal pat
ronage bestowed upon it.
The Catania camp-meefing conven
ed on the 27th, and closed on the
31st ultimo. Several prominent min
isters were present, and the gospel
was preached with power and much
good accomplished. Twenty-three
were added to the church, and the
membership much revived. The
meeting was well attended, and the
usual chatting between the sermons,
was substituted by prayer meetings,
singing hymns, etc. Twice a day the
young men could he seen going in
one direction, and the young ladies
in another, all going out inio the
woods to invoke the blessings of God
tipon the people. May He who at
tends the raven’s cry, hear their uni
ted prayer.
