Dr. Felton’s wine room bill
posing a tax of $10,000 upon these
banes of prohibition by good counties,^ majority has
passed the house a
and it is thought will pass the senate
without any trouble. Atlanta is in
fested with them and their evil is ap
parent to the legislature.

Recently a gentleman doing busi¬
ness’in Columbus died and his young
daughter, who has scarcely reached
her majority, at once assumed his
place and is now conducting the bus
iness in a satisfactory and profitable
way. Some of the papers say she is
of gentle blood, but the information
seems to us gratuitous. If blood will
tell, and we believe it will, her course
proves her well bred. May her ex¬
ample prove infectious.
Mrs. Augusta Evans Wilson has a
*new novel in pr <D ss, to be issued ear¬
ly in Septemb (U r. Her last novel
was published about twelve years
ago and while it added both to her
fame and fortune she has declined to
write again in obedience to the wish¬
es of her husband until the present
time. She is now a resident of Mo¬
bile, Ala., but was born and reared
in Columbus and was a citizen . of
that place when she won fame.
It is frequently the case that we
cannot publish communications sent
to us-fbr publication, not because
they have not sufficient literary merit
or for lack of interest, but for reasons
that an editor only can know, Fre
quently a letter that would find ready
publication at one time, is crowded
into the waste basket at another time.
Our friends all are invited to write
for the Journal and we promise if
they do to always give a readable pa
per, containing only timely informa
tion. Careful editing only can in
sure this.
Reducing letter postage to two
cents was a good thing all around. *It
helps the people and pays . the post
office depaitment. A still further
reduction will probably be made
soon. This generation will see letter
postage as low as one cent, and pos
sibly lower.—Atlanta Constitution
The reduction of letter postage has
had such a" happy result that it ought
# * to induce the people to try a reduced
rate on small parcels. Why not let
the people receive books at one cent
a pound just as they do newspapers
and cheap novels? It would enable
them to purchase volumes substan¬
tially bound where they now buy
trash.
THE GRANGER’S FRIENDS.
The convention of grangers and
their friends at Kingsboro Thursday,
taken all in all, was a pleasant and a
profitable occasion. The heavy rains
of the previous evening prevented crowd the
attendance of many, but the
was large and representative, There
was present the man who had an axe
to grind, the man who ought to have
one to grind and the man who grinds
axes. They, met to enjoy the day
and they enjoyed it, each after his
own fashion.

the grounds that good old hymn,
“Children of the Heavenly King,”
was being sung. After it was finish
ec y a short, fervent prayer was offered
upj w hen Mr. R. E. Fort, president,
introduced Capt. T. H. Kimbrough,
Master of the State Grange, who
ma de an address up the grange and
j ts wor h. He spoke for nearly an
hour feelingly and eloquently of the
order, its past, its present and its lu
ture, telling graphically of what it has
done, of what it is doing and what it
hopes to do. He stressed the impor¬
tance of farmers organizing to main¬
tain the rights they have as well as to
secure those that are now denied
them, It was a good speech and was
well received.
J udge W. I. Hudson was then in¬
troduced. He had not expected to
speak, but when called upon to speak
in a good cause he could never re¬
fuse. In the grange he thought that
there was one feature that, taken
alone, would commend the institu¬
tion to farmers. That feature is the
elevation of the farmer’s w.ves, and
daughters, the lightening of their bur¬
dens and increasing the field of their
pleasures. He insisted that we must
educate our women and free them
from drudgery if we would elevate
the race and achieve success in life.
Serve the devil by rearing your daugh¬
ters in ignorance and he will pay you
off in drunken sons-in-law. If you
cannot educate your sons and daugh¬
ters b®th help the helpless by educat¬
ing the girls. The Judge gave much
good advice and was roundly applauel
ed.
President Fort then introduced Col
John Clines,of Mountain Hill Grange.
Col. Clines in an offhand way that
is as novel and refreshing as it is orig¬
inal, proceeded to catalogue the ene¬
mies of farmers and as each one was
introduced to his hearers he was at
once demolished. There was much
of wit and humor in the speech, but
these only made’ palatable a whole
some dose of practical suggestions,
