Cigarette—Snake Story—“Hangs
or A’o Bangs.
I' During the present week the peo
| e of this portion of the county
lave noticed a cloud ol dust extend
| : g all along the'western side of the
L unty. No special attention was
u
\
given the circumstance at first, but
as it seemed to grow denser and
higher each day, your correspondent
set to investigate the matter and
foundtbe cloud of dust emanating
from tee bed of the Chattahoochee
river.
A horse shoe was found within two
inches of the center ol a solid log
two feet in diameter the other day.
It is supposed that the shoe was
nailed to the tree lor a horse rack
wbe: the tree was small, and as the
tree grew it became completely bur
ied—a une object on which to break
an axe or a commandment.
Now that the cigarette is
discussion in the papers I will cite
a case. I knew a young man of
promising prospects to be cut off in
the bloom of youth. The physicians
said it was lung trouble and an in
vestigation proved that he had never
smo j cet ] a cigarette.
Mr. Judson Graddic comes to the
front with a snake story. On his
way to l he fisld the other day he cut

Our literary club recently discussed
the subject of “Bangs or No Bangs.”
In the whole discussion no reference
was made to the gray-bearded joke
o the woman with bangs
looking “like a cow with a board
over her face.” Lum D.

WANAMAKER ON ADVERTISING
John W'anamaker, the great Phil
adelphia merchant, recently spoke as
follows about advertising:
“I never in my lite used such a
thing as a poster, dodger 01 hand
bill. My plan for fifteen years has
been to buy so much space in a news¬
paper and fill it up with what I want
ed. I would not give an advertise
ment in a new'spaper of 400 circula
tion for 5,000 dodgers or posters. If
I wanted to sell cheap jewelry or tun
a lottery scheme I might use posters.
but 1 would not insult a decent read¬
ing public with hand bills. The class
of people who read such things are
poor material to look to for support
in mercantile affairs. I deal directly
with the publisher. 1 say to him :
‘How long will you let me run a col¬
umn of matter through your paper
for $ioo or $500/ as the case may
be. let him do the figuring, and if
1 think he is not trying To take more
than his share I give him the copy.
! I lay aside the profits on a particular
line of goods for advertising purpo¬
ses. Tiie first year I laid aside $3
j 000; last year L laid aside and spent
I $40,000. 1 have done better this
year, and shall increase that sum, as
the profits warrant it. I owe my
success to the newspapers and to them
1 shall freely give a certain profit of
my yearly business.”
