STRAY THOUGHTS.
Some years ago there appeared a
book entitled “Thinks I To Myself,”
now out of print. It was an unpre
tentious little book, but it contained
many important practical lessons for
every day life A leading feature of
the little book was to impress the
importance of “doing your own think¬
ing.” How few do this. The great
mass of mankind act from impulse.
Settled conviction has little to do
with acts or course of life. All man
kind are more or less vagarists, and
like the Athenians they are eager “to
tell some new thing.” This is fear¬
true when it is considered with
avidity the details of horrid
and scandal is devoured and
fearfully the public morals are
by it. The public press
a fearful responsibility in this
Looking over the map of human
how few do “their own thinking.”
one man in a community does
thinking for all and sometimes
not think for himself. The
to think is a distinguishing
of man and elevates him
the brute, and yet with this
power if he does not think
moves on as the beasts of burden.
The perfection of education is to
u m man „ n tn to think think, and ana to to thi mink lk
wisely and well. Brain power is de
rived from the proper exercise of the
faculties. This is evident
the ^ history 3 of great & orators, great
witters . and , great
great
preachers. Napoleon Bonaparte was
right when he said that a man was
great when he could think and sp#kk
standing up.Not uttering the thoughts
of others, but his own thoughts, 0 and
as thought follows thought the fire
burns and radiant beauty guilds the
picture. Stray thoughts sometime,
like the A f rican traveler, pick up
diamonds of rare value, but like the
hands of skilled thinking p- throu and f be pol- ^
I ished thereby. Think ! Oh, think ! is

GOOD LUCK.
A neighbor says in this h’aru year
he had the good luck to pay his debts
and have a little left. From whence
came the good luck? From good
management. This neighbor went
on the short crop basis and the result
showed , , , his . good , prudence . , and
sense,
foresight. And besides he consider
ed if the crop was short the means
would be lacking o to supply 1 r J some nec
essary / articles, ’ and in order not
burden his . he made . all
money crop
the home supplies possible.
“How much meat have you raised?”
“Enough to do my family.”
“Will you have to buy a horse or
mule, as you have lost one?”
“No, 1 have two fine colts, onq of
which I will put to the plough next
year.”
“How about milk and butter at
3 vour hous- ?”
lenty and . spare. My good ,

wife has sold butter enough to keep
us in sugar and , coffee —. and , some oth ,
er things.”
This is a poor man, as the world
would say, yet he is rich in comforts
and independence. . "I he two wheel
ed carts do not hunt such men.
Another says I have had bad luck.
The crop is short ana I could not
pay out, and the merchant and the
guano dealer had to carry me over
for another year. If the same qu^s
tlOnS were asked . the answer would
be . the negative. . The truth 01 . the ,
in
whole matter is* bl$i luck is bad man
agement. A one horse farm will not
support a top buggy, fine Sunday
clothes and other things of like
acter to be paid r for by j cotton.
