THE SITUATION.
The great political campaign of
1888 has ended in a disastrous defeat
to the democratic party and the situ¬
ation is a gloomy one. It settles two
questions. There can be no tariff re
form for the next four years, and
perhaps never. The trusts, monopo
lies and manufacturers have the pow
er and will not yield their unjust gains
under a protective tariff. The wor
ship at the shrine of Moloch must
continue. The labor of the many
must increase the wealth of the few.
There will he no decrease of taxes
under radical rule.
The large surplus in the U. S.
treasury will be wasted on jobs with¬
out any public good, and extravagance
and corruption will flow like a river.
But the most painful fact in the his
tory of the campaign was the corrupt
use of money. Philadelphia, Boston
and Chicago each contributed one
million dollars to the republican cam
paign fund, and it is ascertained that
the Rads, used not less than sixty
millions. The result is mainly attrib
utable to the money “power and a
dark and portentious cloud hangs
over our free institutions when elec
lions are controlled by money.
Perhaps the result is not an un¬
mixed evil. it ought to solidify with
ten-fold force the democratic party
south and teach all true men that
manufactures, home supplies and self
reliance are the watchwords to vicfco
tory. Civis.
Farmer 15. S. Irvin, of Wilkes
county, Ga., informs the Washington,
(Ga.) Gazette that he has given the
subject of building up old lands con
siderable attention, and has arrived
at the conclusion that the best way is
to terrace the land and leave a belt
of ten feet, where practicable, just
above the terrace. This belt, he says,
will grow up in our native grasses,
catch all the soil that comes from above
and keep the terrace from breaking
and the land from washing. Farmer
Irvin says he would prefer clover in
these belts, hut it is so hard to get a
stand of it, and to keep the native
grasses from rooting it out.
