EDITORIAL NOTES.
G«n. Phil Cook has been appoint¬
ed secretary fo fill the vacancy occa
sionud by the death of N. C. Barnett.
A good selection.
The democrats in congress have ia
•uad an address to the people explain
ing their conduct and giving reason
fer their action during the last few
week* in the house. We wish we had
apace for this interesting document.
A young lady walking the street of
Burlington Iowa, in the epee day
light was assaulted and brutally rob¬
ed of her beautiful hair And this

complaint of southern lawlessness.
Let judgement and correction begin
At heme.
The republican leaders are un
doubtly seized with partisan rabies,
and it will net be strange if the whole
party is afflicted with political hydro¬
phobia. Partisanism has absorbed
all patriotism, and sectionalism has
obliterated all sense of right to any
mvo their own party. Statesmanship
Is a thing of the past with tbe.n.
The agitation of congressional can¬
didacies is premature. Too much
and too lengthy discussions of candi¬
dates excite* the public mind to that
degree th t in a large measure dis¬
qualifies it for prudent acti :n. We
have enough of good and competent
lnem from whom selection canbe made
with ease, safety and profit to and for
the people.
Kilrain has had another
with one Va-q leline, a
at New Orleans, Kilrain was
fortunate in this encounter than
John Sullivan, whipping his
nist on the third round. This does
net speak well for th# city of^ New
Orleane. as the fight was attended by
• large audience composed of high
officials and guarded by policemen.
Col. N. C. Barnett, Secrotary of
state, died at hi* home in Atlanta,
February, 2nd. Ha was probably
the eldeev efticer in t'ie State of Ga.,
being ef (be advanced ago of 88 year*
Mr. Barnett was elected secretary in
1S43 and Has served the state faith
fully and well for many years, It will
be remembered that when General
Huger was the military General of
G*., under federal domination that
Barnett refused to attach
tlie *0*1 ef *Utw to some Aft of tl)0
and was (Vu.-havge by Gen
Huger. He carried with him the seal
«{ the *ta'e. and kept it until his re
election in 1873 from which time ho
served the »Ut* as s«er«tary u.itil Ins
d*ath. Governor Gordon ordered
the State House dosed iu honor of
the de»d-
Ta# Macon Telegraph ep**kiug
through some of h* corwupondettU
»*,«. that Judge S- W. Harris baa
about consented to enter the cougres
eienai race in the 4th di-trict, aud eoit
eluded that he will be elected. '1 his
i» not a solve* problem. Others are
in the race that haye many friefldr.
Hon. T. W. Grimes has proves him
■elf an able and trusty reprisanative
of the people Others living in tho 4th
are worthy and well qualified. The
4th district will never have a repre
,,native of much influence in the na
tional legi-lature so long as they con¬
tinue to change every few years.
WU*n a go. d man is in let him re¬
main and build for himself a name
and character that will be known felt
and acknowledged in the house The
men who carry the greatest influence
•t home anion^ the people are not al
way* the men that control in the leg¬
islative bodies. There are striking
examples of this truth all over the
country.
Senator Ingalls, of Kansas, l-»*tthe
opportunity of his life in his spoeeh
on th* Butler bill. He might have
displayed a statesmanship and patri¬
otism that would have g ven his name
to future times as the great leader of
bis party devoted to the best interest
•f ‘he American people. But his
great intellect was Minded'by parti¬
san prejudice, which prostituted hi*
wonderful oratorical powers to the
base purpose of animadverting against
his own nee. His speech is incon¬
sistent and illogical from aeginning
to end. Asserting that the Caucae
tiaa race is the leader of thought, of
pro g re «* and sivilization throughout
the world sad in all ages, he turne*
aid denies this proportion by warn¬

south that unless they cuter to the
partisan views of himself and others
of his ilk that they may expect to be
the victims of African supremacy and
domination.
Hi* speech may be characterized as
a tinkling cymbal and a sounding
brass, a vox ot preteria nihil, a bare
circumlocutory cycle of oritorical
sonorosity, circumscribing atoms of
ideality.

Thomas Reed.
The Speaker of the House seems
determined to carry out his revolut ion¬
ary scheme of enacting law without
and dispite the vote* of a part of the
National legislature. The scenes
have secured for the path weak
u«t at all complimentary to the
bers of congress. While we admired
the courage of the democrat* in re¬
listing such usurpation of right we
cannot commend the measure*.
Thongh Reed may prove himself a
tyrant and a usurper we see no reason
why the democ ais should show them
selves a set of wou.d be pugilist by
threats and fist shaking. It would
be more dignified and becoming to
them to resent a id resist in a calm
and dignified manner the encroach¬
ments of the speaker upon their rights.
Speaker Reed is said to be a man
of large frame and large brain, and
his cour.e since he has been speaker
shows him to be a man ot deep and
bitter prejudice, and a settled det«r
■uination to rule the house for parti¬
san purposes. We are glad that we
hare seen no iudieation of spleuitic
rath in our congressman, but the con¬
trary is shown. 11* lus presented a
course of dignified resentment of
wrong and a calm determination *•
prove himself worthy of the position
given him by the people of the 4th
district Hob. Thus. W. Grimes has
proven himself worthy of the position
g veil him by his people. Reed may
contiuue his usurpation of power for
a time but the day is not far distant
when an intelligent right thinking
p.sople will consign hint to the shades
of private life wiioi e he can sullenly
clutw the cud of bitter eeccollectiou.
