HARD TIMES.
That the times arc out of joint
needs only to he stated, to be accept¬
ed. It did not use to be so wi,h our
fathers. In those good oil days to
he in debt proved the exception: in
these pipeing limes of peace to lie in
debt forms the general rule of the
people’ What is to Le done about
it any how? It is an evil wind that
blows no good and there i.< some
good connected with and resulting
from what we all cal! hard times. In
the first [lace hard times teaches the
iesson of economy. Since the war,
writers upon economics have endeav¬
ored to stem the current of extrava¬
gance and the tendency to waste so
eminently charaeteris-.ic of our south¬
ern people, but up to within a few
years back the precepts laid down
have not been heeded. It is indeed
hard to change the spots of the leop¬
ard or tlie skin of the^Etheopian but
tile Creator of both cm change cith¬
er and tquaJly so, can He, by His
own melhods and 111 His o-.vn good
time, change us. This may seem to
some a far fetched and altogelher a
sentimental i lea but to the reader of
the inspired and profane record
position is altogelher reasonable and
tenable.
Hard Times has for his pip ils, chil¬
dren just beginning to learn; in sncii
a school precept has to give place to
object teaching and lo the yet more
effective method, hard experience.
After the war closed, the new condi¬
tions forced themselves at once and
unsought upon a people, and while
that could be done, while a stroke of
the pen could in a day work so com¬
plete a metamorphosis upon thefinan
cal and social stains of a section, of
our republic, yet no such fa-tor could
change the people themselves. Bred
in their bones and marrow are many
of the characteristics that go to dis¬
tinguish them from all other people.
To live freely aud generously, to de¬
spise small savings, to contemn what
they call stinginess, to gather and to
scatter wi.h a full hand are traits that
have been handed down from father
to son for many a generation, An i
those tilings can not be changed in a
day nor perhaps in a generation but
with the proper conditions bestowed
the changes will gradually take place
and in course of time, people and en
vironments wiil become congenial—
hard times is a heaven sent
ia tiiis.
Another lesson j is taught us | >v
hard times and that is a higher stand.
ard cf mo:als. It enforces largely
abstemiousness and self-denial. \\ ho
has not observed that in times ot gen
era! prosperity, the laxity of pub iu
and private morals? Take, if you
please, the little town of Hamilton
and note what she is today as com
pared with what she used to be. Now
any lady may venture upon the
streets without ,1 , fear r of c having 1 • her 1
ears elter.ded ps 111 by anv obscene \
or
t fane language. , Now the office ... of ,.
. .. . .
marsh-d is almost a sinecure in so tar
as police duties are concerned, for
the bully, and the bravado, have
gradually become unknown quanti¬
ties here. Now, the man who valued
his personal honor so high tixat he
was constantly on the lock-out for
insults, has cc ased to stai d on the
street corners ready to take or give
the gage of latte, for Iris honor i s
no longer suj polled by the ample
means nenes-ary for such a ge.nde
man. I n a word things have chang
ed and wonderfully changed and
what has wrought this change, oh,
vc immortal gods?
Now the Jouu.yal is not sziven to
idle speculation and in the foreg,
has only endeavored to throw out
some hints for the benefit of its read
ers, that th e y may, if they
