Figs have been abundant of
late. Now pears and scupper
liongs are coining into use. ■ This
is a good country, beyond doubts.

need it.
If there were as much genuine
enterprise in our little town as
there is cross-firing, what a boom
would be Experienced within a
few weeks.
• All hands pull together. Nol
one at a time, nor one against an¬
other will do. Concert of action
is the only correct road.

Bound, of Upson have been on a
recent visit to relatives in Knox¬
ville.
Lish Harris is the champion
coon hunter of the county. Be
has fine dogs and brings them in
nearly every time he goes for
them. v
It is remarkaddy strange that
in these, days' and times, when
sources of information are more
than abuiulant and the means of
procuring same are so available,
that one mail does about all the
thinking for a community and
shapes, up almost, every idea
vancecl in it.
The County Commissioners a re
now engaged in having a substan¬
tial bridge constructed at Moran’s
mill.
Those who persist, in violating
town ordinances, and oftentimes
attempt to go beyond that, need
not. become so much disgruntled
when called upon to anti. B you
dance, come straight up and make
*a little contribution so that the
fiddler will get his pay.
The Roberta school continues
to improve. Our people ought,
and doubtless will, give it their
undivided support. Nothing lias
ever done more for a community
than a firstclass school.
Mr. F. 11. Wright has recently

spent several days at Indian
Springs lor recreation and better
feeling.
Protracted meetings have been
carried on at the Knoxville Bap¬
tist church and at Walker’s Chap¬
el this week.
Deafiiess Cannot lie Cured
by local applications, as they can¬
not reach the diseased portion of the
ear. There is only bite way to cure
Deafness, and that is by constitu¬
tional remedies. Deafness is caused
by an inflamed condition of the mus
cous liniug of the Eustachian Tube.
When this tube gets inflamed you
have a rumbling sound or imperfect
hearing, and when it is entirely clos¬
ed Deafness is the result, and unless
the inflammation can bo taken out
and this tube restoredJto its normal
eondit on, hearing will be destroyed
forever; nine cases out of ten are
caused by catarrh, which is nothing
bat an inflamed condition of the
museous surface.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
for any case of Deafness (caused by
catavtii) that cannot be cured by
Hall’s Catarrh Care. Send for cir¬
culars, free.

Jim Holt went up also to the
Gampmeet-ing at the Rock. He
goes ahead of the others who have
reported, and even tells of the
baked chicken and that fine“stuf
fiu” that the waiter passed around
with it.
Complaint is made and has
been for some time, about negroes
and sometimes whites cursing and
yelling’ along the highways as
they leave town at. night. There
is no excuse for such conduct, and
to put it mildly for the perpetra-^
tors, a persistent indulgence in
such may cost more that this no
tice.

con Sunday on Iris bicycle. IIo

at his house. He wears a broad
and pleasant smile on the strength,

cotton this week t) Wright &
Allen.
Miss Mamie Bias in game has
been down this week from Yates
ville on a visit to relatives and
friends.
At this writing Gene Trammell
is quite,unwell.
The mountainous turnpike be¬
tween Roberta and Knoxville has
received some attention f’rom
overseer Nolan and his road
hands tills week. If the hills were
moved into the intervening hol¬
lows. it would then be nice for
bicycle rides, but each town
wonhl be forced to furnish an ele¬
vator to bring up the cyclist at
last, This might be avoided by
by moving the hills to the extent
of the width of each town. But
then there would be no town. No
solution only to put a plankwav
over the hollows. We recom¬
mend that the next grand jury so
recommend.
i Henry McCrary (col.) was ar-
rested by the Marshal Saturday.

sound of the cotton, gins despite
all the talk of no money.

construction down at the ram
That ram is a success on butting
out the dams.
Lucius Harvey brought in a
new bale of cotton® Wednesday
and had it ginned at the Roberta
ginnery.
Bretty weather of late has put
a new and better looking face on
things.
We cry hard times, no money
^
no prospect for any etc., but we
are yet free from any scourage
like yellow fever.
Our system of working public
roads is simply abomniable. If it
were carried out as the laws gov¬
erning same provide and direct,
die whole thing might be ’differ¬
ent ; bnt as it at present operates,
it seems to be totally impracti¬
cable. None of the roads in "our
county arc in good condition.
What'is the remedy? Wouldn’t,
it be well to try a different way
of working them. It is true that
no reasonable person could expect
them to be put ia first class fix in
one year nor i:t two or three
years. Here is the way jmd the
only just way: Let each one
subject to road duty pay so much
tax or contribute so much work
per annum, and in addition to this
levy an advolorem tax of suffic¬
ient amount to meet the demand.
Then let proper officers be ap¬
pointed to take charge of the
funds and have t he work properly
done, this is a matter of fact to
be placed under such regulations
as would best subserve the pul
lie interests in this behalf.
need a change and it ought to be
made as soon as possible and in
the proper way.
