ELECTRIC ^ L THEORY OF
VISION.
A scientist Tells an Experience H*
Had VVatfc’hing the Rhine Falls.
When lecturing at the Royal
institution recently Professor
Lodge put forward a hypothesis
concerning the relations between
vision and electricity. In connec¬
tion with this thery Dr. Obach
Communicates to'Nattfrfe an inter¬
esting account of an observation
of his on his own eyes. One even¬
ing, he tells us, after watching
the famous Rhino falls near
Schauffhauseu for a considerable
time in the lull glare of the sun,
which produced a dazzling white¬
ness of spray, Dr; Obach felt in¬
tense pains in his head; which
did not diminish much even after
he had retired to bed lillh perfect¬
ly dark rdom. He thereupon re.
sorted to a remedy frhich had
given relief to pains in the eyes
on previous occasions; simply
placing the thumb and forefinger
ovfer the closed eyelids and im¬
parting gentle vibrations to the
eyeballs:
After two or threfe vibrations
he was compelled to Stbp, Us the
remedy was not only painful, but
produced the sensation of a bluish
\vhi:e light of dazzling brightness
——like an electric arc-^being
brought almost into contact with
the eyes; After the lapse of a
few minutes the JummoUs pile
noinena subsided, and he again
commenced the vibrations of the
eyeball#, which now could be
done longer than before ere it be¬
came unbearable. This operation
was repeated eight or ten* times?
till finally the vibrations were al¬
most painless and no longer pro¬
duced ans luminosity.
The explanation of this phe¬
nomenon appears to Dr. C bach
to be tnis. The intense bright¬
ness of the light reflected from
the spray had not only reduced
the resistance of the intercepting
medium to a minimum, but at
the same time overtaxed the ejas
tic tissues whose duties it would
n been to shake the materia.
:o is norm 1 ! coalition
• th cessation of the light.
The energy thus lost by the tis
.-uts was then suppressed from
without by the vibrating fingers,
For what reason the return of the
intercepting substance to.it?. origi
mil insulating condition should
also be attended by tlie sensation
of light is difficult to conjecture,
unless it be directly due to the
physiological effect produced on
breaking the circuit. Similar
effects, Dr. Obach says, can be
observed in a less pronounced
form 011 vibrating the eyeballs
after an ordinary overstrain of
the eyes-.—Albany H erald.
