JIknkv (imi riN. IVoiii Mercer tot vers By. Macon*, February ‘20th, 181)2. For some time prist. Dr. Snmnlly, of Mercer, has been exporting a visit from Dr. F. T, Mates, of the Ameri can Baptist Kdueational Society. Dr. (iat.es has been called to New York by tin* management of the society, and Dr, Nunnally has recently re ceived a Idler from hint raying that a full statement of Mercer** aee, mints he sent on immediately, 'rids, Dr, Nunnally has done, and he himself Will follow it in time to meet with the society in March. Mercer’s ac counts show that while the college is not practically wealthy, still it is in good condition and fully able to keep up the high standard which it has always maintained. The #8,000 installment on the #10,000 recently raised by Dr. Nun nally and his colleagues, has been paid in, and with this excellent show ing tin* Doctor expects to induce the society to largely increase the en dowment fund of #10,000 which has been promised. Dr. Nunnally says Mercer must have a reading room, and this fact alone iimures its success. He is always planning for tin* hoys, and this is especially a movement in l Ik- right direction. Its success w depend largely on the Interest taken in it by the boys, as it is especially for I heir benefit. Dr. Nunnally i* highly in favor oi establishing a normal school at Mer- eer. I le says many of the boys leach during the summer, and doubtless they find tbeniselvch very deficient in tin* art of teaching, and more or | less “ru <ty" in t he elementary branches, lie thinks if tin-* normal school nIioiiM lie opened every y •i few weeks before eoiumemeiiu. ii would b<> the means of imparting line'll valuable information on ill subject of teaching; and would thus enable (be young nun better to un- d{w*l.ind what will be required Ilieui a- teacher*, and how to per form those duties to the best advan tage. Whv could noisome philan thropic man of Meorgia come to the aid of our two literary societies just now, in cstabli-hing a printing otliee at Morrery It would certainly en able ns in publish mi:* paper ill a much smaNer cost, and would also add a very grand feature I" the col lege, in as fum h as it would the boys lo till lucrative *puMlions in the fu ture. We have several good printers among m* now who could soon learn "i.aiv others without any actual out lay of money and with but little time and labor spent. The necessary out- lit Would ptobablv cost si\ hundred dollam. We could then have the paper under our immediate supervis- ion, which would relieve u-* of much embarrassment and confusion. Hav ing set Up tin* type, we could take the forms to one of the pressmen of M.ieoii and have t lm paper printed for a mere trille. It is indeed a pleasure to bear the lectures on physiology and bvgi *ne, delivered by Dr. I\. IV Moore. He uses anatomical charts to illustrate Ids discourses. Notes are taken at each lecture and questions linked on the lecture last delivered, It is very essential to a liberal education that one should have a knowledge of his physical nature, and of the laws gov erning (Ik* preservation of good health. Our Junior class election came off a. few days ago wieh resulted as fol lows: J. T. Hammond, president; S. II. Allen, vice-president; Y. K. Bar- geron, historian; K. I). Jelks, sucre- larv; U. The ways of the wicked ace pant linding out, Imt the wicked eon- fldenco men wlio have lmen fleecing victims by tiie thou sands all over the country, have been detected at a new game. In several states the endowment assoe’ation hits played out, so to speak, and it would seem that there would lie little need of “supremos” taking to the road again, But such is not the fact. They, or their agents, are now reported ns soliciting customers for “supply associations” which claim to furnish their customers with a “cheap and safe means of obtaining, hy our easy payment system, any article of clothing, or in fact almost any article car ried in stock hy large wholesale houses.” The cheapest and safest way is to turn your hack upon this kind.of gentry, should they visit Tiftou and vicinity. Thu local dealers whom one can rind “at home” every time, when wanted, are in lmsincss,it istruo, to make money, hut competition compels them to make Imsto slowly in getting rich; not so with the other eatch-tne-if-you- eati sort of a chap. “Trade at home” is a good motto; if you cannot do this, trade with some responsible person.
