Volume Two.
To-day the Gazsttk enters upon
tho second year of its existence, and
is a hale, hearty bantling. For the
past twelve months it has labored as
best it could, under existing unfav
orable circumstances, for the general
welfare of the city of Tifton und
contiguous territory and especially
that portion of it known us Berrien
connty.
While the editor is aware he has
not pleased everybody, couldn’t have
done it if he bod tried, he feels grati
fied in the fact that the paper is rec
ognized os ono of tho very best week
lies of the state by both press and
people. The lending people of this
section pronounce it the model coun
try newspaper of southern Georgia.
In maintaining the high standard
the Gazette has taken in the news
paper world it hue cost the editor niuny
hours of toil and anxiety, and a great
many more dollars than has been
paid In to the paper. The editor
frankly admits ho is largely responsi
ble for this by his leniency to his
patrons and he will continue to be
us lenient ns he possibly can; the
stringency of the times demand it.
To tho citizens of Tifton and im
mediate MCiruVj the editor look* pri
marily for a support, for they are
receiving tho lion’s share of the ben
efit acortiing from tho paper’s publi
cation. Many subscriptions and
somo advertisements expired with
the Inst Issue. Those should be re-
nowed at onco and effort should be
made to increaso the number of its
patrons—its ciroulution and influ
ence.
Tho policy of the paper novor Ims
been and will never bo hidden be
hind a bnshcl--that policy is to do
good mid csohsw evil. While the
editor clings tenaciously to his viows
of right ho does not propOso to fall
out with and abuse those whose God-
given right it is to disagree with
him. Arguments mid not abuse will
win a brother.
In concluding this article tl|o ed
itor desires to impress upon Ills pa
trons tho foot tie is in need of every
dollar that is duo him. Ho needs it
to pay his debts and to continue im
proving the paper, and trusts all who
can will make immediate payment-
The single amounts arc small to

Iinprclona of the (H. Zarate Convention
and the Third Party.
The following is a review of the
St. Lon is convention and its offspring
the third party—oy one who was
there and caught the inspiration of
the event. Hon. Charles L. Moses
went to tho St. Louis convention,
wuz present at all its sessions, and
comes book to his state and people
and declares nnto them the foots of
the aroh-conspiracy agreed upon on
that memorable occasion. Whose re
port will the people believe, that of
Mr. Moses, a native Georgian and
life-long democrat or Mr. Post,
renegade republican of donbtfnl na
tivity? Wo shall see:
Before closing, however, I wish to
note a few impressions I received of
the convention. Never before was
there a convention of more discord
ant elements—and vet there was ap
parent harmony. Four-fifths of the
men wanted women suffrage; but to
secure the south they waived its
present consideration. Sido by side
sat the prohibitionist und the snloon-
ist. The religious fmiuiio, witli bis
divine mission to reform the world
held friendly communion witli the
man who despises all law, both liu
man and divine. Ou one seat sat
the modest southern fanner, too
timid to raise [vis vufee In the tumul
tuous assembly, while on the obuir
in front of him stood a woman
howling to the chairman for recog
nition. Hero might be seen tin
high tariff advocate from Pennsyl
vanin telling a knot of farmers they
ought to quit talking tariff, that
wliut they need is more money. IIo
woll knows Hint, under the tariff law,
it will puss through their pockets
into his. In another placoyou could
boo tho kid-gloved “professional re
former” indoctrinating the “horny-
handed sou of toil” in his glorious
theories. On the stage there is
dramatio scone. The cz-federals
have dug up onoe more that old en
sanguined garment, which has nl
ready been buried p thousand times
and are calling upon tho confederate
Veterans to join in ono more funeral
The yankee, however, 1ms shrewdly
stipulated that Johnny Jtcb is to pay
for the tours, and bear the funeral
expenses. He gets “turkey,” while
Johnny, us usiiul, gets “buzzard.”
But the convention is gone. Wliut
sliul I tho harvest be? As I said be
fore, Georgia has been doomed by
these conspirators. They rely for
success upon tlm desperation of
debt and tho hopelessness of despair
that exists among our people. lint,
oven iu the mmlners of impatience,
can ivc not remember Georgia? Oan
wo not remombor that “United we
stand, divided we fall?” Shull we
who have withstood tho prejudices
and power of the combined world,
shall we now turn and destroy one
another to the delectation of onr
enemies?
Ix-t us remember the story of Troy
and the Trojan horse. That city

whoso ovitlcnoo done tho Nows decide

ing that platform?
It oun’t bo on the testimony of
Hon. L. F. Livingston, president of
the State Alliance, Hon. W. A. Wil
son, vice-president of the Stato Alli
ance, or Hon. Olios. I* Moses, a
prominent alllnnccniun, who were at
tho St. Louis conference and who
say emphatically that not only was
this pension plank mutlo a part of
tlio platform hut also a plank deolnr-
ing the baby party in favor of uni
vcrsal suffrage—a plank equally ns
odious to southern pcoplo us the in
famous pension plunk.
It can’t be upon tho evidence of
Mr. Gunn, secretary of the Randolph
oounty ulliuuoo and editor of tlio
Cutlibert Liberal-Kutorprise, who, to
satisfy himself upon this subject,
took the trouble to procure copies of
some twenty odd different third par
ty papers published ill Missouri,
Iowa and other western states and
he found that every one of the pa
pers published these planks m a part
of the platform. Bro. Gunn is *uor-
on (lily satisfied that these resitutions
were adopted as a part of the plat
form, tuid has so published it in ids
paper.
Hie evidence is overwhelming that
the leaders of the new party a.e
guilty of the grossest double-dcMing
with tbe people. These planks wore
added to the platform for the pur
pose of catching vote* and are being
used only wliwo it/is supposed they
will prove the biggest bait. Let the
people be not deemed I

Greece. Despairing after ton years
of capturing the city the Greeks
built it huge wooden horse filled with
armed men and pretended to retire
from tho city. Simon, a Green, ap
peared within the walls. He told
tho Trojans that although he had
been a Greek, he had come to enst
his fortunes in Troy, ito toltl the
moil also that the horse was the gift
of the gods, ami persuaded thorn to
pull down tile walls and bring it
into the heart of the citv. That
night Troy was destroyed, Tlio
proud oity that for ten years had
withstood the power of Greece with
her thousand ships was destroyed by
tlio lying liiis of 8inion.
I warn tho people against this
people’s party. It is pregnant with
unseen dangers. Beware of ex-re-
pnbli cans and missionaries from onr
enemies who are persuading us to
pull down the walls of demoorooy.
