None— 1 There arc many plantere who call themselves furmere and ac cording to their own estimation they arc; hut, dear reader, there is a wide difference between a farmer and a i tauter. All far mere aro plan ten, nit nil planters arc not farmers. I regard farming as one of the highest avocations of life, and one that re quires more forethought and dcejicr research than some of the learned professions. Farming is a nleasanl occupation, and if judiciously man aged will pay the farmer one hun dred cents on the dollar for the time he Hjicuds in proper thinking. “Brain and muscle should work together.” He should consider well the soil, the different kinds of seasons nml climate as well as the different kind nf pro ducts, ever striving to nboid to routes to disappointment and failure. The cultivation of tobacco does not essen tially differ from that of any other dean crop. The cultivation should begin as soon as the plant takes root, which, witli ordinary Hcason, is usu ally from live to ten day,. The first working is most, effectually done with the line, drawing the dirt slightly nrotind the plant. The first plowing, which should follow the line working in from eight to ten days, should ho done with an ordinary ^itton sweep Eyes, I'olities In Irwin County. InwtNVlM.u, May 4, 1W>2. Mu. The tobacco crop is essentially a fancy crop, there is no other farm product that require so much ami so close attention. Tho farmer may sow Ins grain in tho fall or spring, after which it requires no moro labor until harvest time to secure a crop ; In, plants his corn and potatoes, and after cultivating for for a short sea son it is left and requires compara tively no more attention until tho gal boring season. But not‘so with tho tobacco crop; constant and untir ing vigilance is required all along from ilm time the seed is sown until tile crop is disposed of, the neglect of pro/ier attention only perhaps (or throe or four days at a critical period may reduce the value of tho crop from that of wrappers to tiller prieoa or even less. Tliti grower who re gards Ids tobacco crop as a secondary matter to lie attended to is the one who fails to secure reinumirativo joi. cos. Tho tobacco crop is a requiring one, and we might say a jealous one, for if neglected it will not yield satis factory returns. This Is clearly de- monstrated by the fact that while some in this section have made a complete failure to grow plants others, through vigilant rare, have made un. equalled success. This should be sufficient evidence tlmt it not only re quires thorough preparation of tho roil, but persistent care to succeed— mcmtfully~-i\\.A^ce'fjtjg) of.ioliae. on, and nok. . ‘v frJMUen hut of alt otheM8ffilBB8iliiB»H»l value. man- set tint, “or eiiltivator.”fc*or tho next plowing sweep wings <* cultivator hoes well turned up in order to throw plenty of dirt toward tin; plant; split tlie middle this time leaving the omjj a little elevated. Follow tho consec utive plowing with the hoe, drawing the flirt, smoothly around the plants, ami as tlie crop progresses work tlie beds gradually higher. When the crop ia laid hy the ridges should I broad and at least live inches above tin' level. If tlie season is adjudged to lie a wot ono, or land low, flat and ot a wet nature, the final plowing shoijld be done with a turning plow twice in a row, taking out tho middle with a shovel plow. This middle or last furrow should lie as deep as pos sible; which will, if excessive rain should follow, art aa a drain to the plant and drawing Iho water from around it. Shallow cultivation is in variably the beat for tobacco; in or dinary season three thorough plowing, will suffice. More or less work, “ac cording In season," will be required, anil in this tho farmer must use hut own judgment. Remember, always work tho Hoil toward tlie plant, never from it. You should bu very careful mil to loavo any pockets to collect water in mid around the plant; the cultivation should lie done so ns to give the laud the best drainage of which it is capable. In a tnhncrn crop drainage is one of tho first things to be considered, for tho reason that all the diseases to which the plant is subject—mil'll as frembing, tiling, spotting, rusting and shedding mines from excessive rain accompanied by excessive beat, The growth of tho plant itself suggests this fact, for in lime of drouth the leaves stand up to gal her in the rain, but so soon as they have enough of it. they immedi ately turn down and throw it off. I repeat, let no stagnant water collect near the plant. NOTICE. I haws a »o«<l barlwr chair for sale (I’rlde of tho Wrtt.) Call ami «ea ma or wile mo. Acl- ilrcM T, O. rim.'ll, I’. M.t Cecil, (la.
