Vernon took occasion to make a statement of bis knowledge of “Gideon’s Band” with a view to setting himself light, and correcting any erroneous impres sions that may lmve gone abroad. “in the first place,” said Mr. Ver-- uon^‘1 did not say at Livonia that the state alliance had anything to do directly with ‘Gideon’s Band.' It was while 1 was in attendance on the state alliance as a delegate from Hart county, however, that I first learned of the existence of this hand. “Mr. DeJarnott, of Greene comity, told me all 1 know about the organ ization. He said that lie was author ized to get ii)i such a hand in oaeli county in the eighth district, and that a man had been appointed to do tho smile work in each of the other districts. “1 was told that ‘Gideon’s Band’ was something like Free Masonry— one degree higher than- the regular illlance and that it would not con flict with my political or religions views. Being a Mason, I knew that if it, was like Masonry it was a good thing, so with this assurance from Mr. DeJarnott, Brother McFarland Mid myself were initiated into what we afterwards found to ho one of the foulest machines of political corrup lion ever concocted on American soil. “AS it seems to he ‘something new J.
