Lust Saturday was a red letter day for our usually quiet community. The occasion was the closing exer cises of Prof. It. C. Woodard’s school at the Knight Academy, There was an tiimsmilly large crowd in attend, juice and we daresay wuh enjoyed by every one present. The exercises were exceeding well rendered and proves that neither teacher nor pu pils have hccu idle for the past five months. The courteous treat ment he always receives at, this pleas- ant home is to him a green oasis in the desert, of life and will never be forgotten. Master Archie Avcritt, Mrs. Bry ant's son, is now at home from the Alalijimp Industrial College, at Au burn, where he has just graduated, lie is fully equipped for a successful horticulturist and talks of locating somewhere in this excellent fruit growing region and engaging special ly in grape eiilture. lie is a young gentleman of faultless habits and will prove an ornament to any com munity where ho may locate. Saturday was Sunday-school pic nic day. Poplar Head, where Messrs. Hook.with & lingers’ mill is located ope and a half tnrles west of Sparks, was till* plane selected for the day’s festivities, and these popular gentle men gnvm a holiday to all their em ployes and kindly used their locomo tive and train road to transport tin* people l,i) and from the grounds. “Ye editor" reached tin.* ground about 9:80 a. in., and found a large ennonurse ot people already on the ground, and was gratified to learn that there were seven Sunday-schools that had united in tills picnic occa sion, viz: Antioch, Sinenlh’s Ever green, Poplar Head, the two schools at. Sparks, Hotrien county, and Buck Creek, of Colquitt county, all of which can he compassed in an area six bv eight, miles. There were not less than (100 or 700 people present, and at least thrcc-fourthy of them were attached in some capacity to one of the seven schools. Buck Creek school did not take putt in the elaborate program ar ranged for the occasion, hut llu< oth er six did. The program was made up nf songs, addresses, essays and recitations. The singing of the schools was grand, it could not bo excelled anywhere; the addresses were all brief and appropriate; the essays wore short, hut stinging re bukes of the vice of intemperance; the recitations by the little girls were just as appropriate and nicely ren dered as could In*. The program complete a respite was taken for a few minutes, and then they cOmoieneo to put the good things that had been brought then* in baskets, boxes,trunks, buckets and pans on the table (about, two hun dred feel in length) and it was soon discovered that there wasn’t half room enough; some spread their din ner on the ground and others did not Open halt their provisions—there was no necessity for it. "Ye editor’ stepped to the endof the table and took a peep along its entire line—it was a grand sight of good things, and ho mentally resolved that ho was glad to he there. The editor is indebted to Mesdatncs (h'con, Clark and Williams, of Sparks, for his dinner. There were many other invitations, cordial and press ing, he could not accept. After,dinner and a short time spent itt promenading around tht ground and chatting,‘the young poo. pie gathered about, tint organ ati'Tr**ii. den d magnificently some of the sweet Sunday-school songs \vf love so much to bear until a all/.wor of rain came up and dispersed hem to find shelter. Altogether it was a grand success, and tin people present were greatly bl'tiolittcd men tally, morally, socially and phy sically. Saturday night was spent with Mr. C.'. II. Beckwith and family, and they wore just as kind to us as if they had kno/ii us all their lives. ntii) that with whom they come in cowazS. air, Beckwith, his wife and his enlSt'e family of daughter*,' sons and sona- j n -law, are enthusiastic and indefa tigable worker*, in the Supday-schoof cause. Their highest aim seems to be tile elevation of the risiug gener ation and placing it upon a higher plain* than that which is now passing off tin* stage qf action. Sunday mot tling, 8:UU o’clock, in company with Mr. Beckwith, his wife and daughter, we attended Sun day-school at Poplar Head, of which lie is superintendent. 1 his school :s composed largely of Messrs. Beck with & Iiogcru’ while employes and their families, and is a model school. At 11:00 we attended divine ser vices at tile Sparks Methodist church ami listened to a plain, practical Ser mon from our young friend, S. W. Brown, tlio pastor. VVt\ dined with Mr. J. P. Parrish and his estimable family. Mrs. Par rish's aged parents came ill immedi ately after (linnet so that wo were denied the privilege of seeing much of her. In t.bn afternoon We attended Sun day-school at the Baptist church where, at 4 o’clock, we addressed the two schools of the town ill behalf of Comity Nuwlay-school Association and urged the people to tako more active interest in the organization This they promised to do and we ex pect a fine attendance from that sec tion at the next meeting of the asso eiation at- Alnptha ott Saturday be fore the Lliini Sunday in October. Wo took tea with Dr. I. .T. (food man and family—consisting of him self, wife and two interesting little daughters. Tho Doctor is just up from a severe illness and is too feeble yet to look after business. Fletcher is a new business man from Quitman who lias just opened a small hut complete stock of general merchandise ill tho l’ontz store at Sparks. He makes a special ty of nice family groceries, including fresh beef, mutton, pork, etc., and bus already secured a good run of cus tomers. Ho invites everybody to come to see him, and examine his goods and prices. Mr. .(. JI. Elliott is doing a thriv ing business, and expects to com mence work on ills large store build ing soon. Sparks 1ms two as thriving Sun day-schools as any town in the enmi ty, and they do render some of the sweetest singing imaginable. Mrs. Beckwith’s singing class, composed of small girls and boys, is the talk of the town. If you want to enjoy a pleasant day and receive royal treatment give Sparks and Iter good people a call.
