JJHHU '' 1 THE GAZETTE: TIFTON, GA., FRIDAY, JULY S. 1892. lira L, A' THE COMING CROP. TOBACCO CULTURE TO SOLVE THE FINANCIAL PROBLEM. banner* Awaking to It» Importance—To* *»»cco Grower* Kxcnralan—Crop* at Cyrlohuta nod at TifUra, Etc. L*V mk Manager Line, accompanied by several other officials of the Georgia Southern and Florida railroad, left on a special train yesterday for. Cy- oloneta and Tiftou. The occasion was the tobacco growers’ excursion to those places. The party was joined at various points along the road by prominent farmers who are interested in the growth, culture and curing of tobacco. The object of die excursion was to encourage the cultivation of tobacco along the line of the Georgia South' ern and Florida road, and the plant ers were asked to accompany Uio party in order that they might have an opportunity of seeing for them selves what south Georgia land was capable o’f producing in this line and of observing die methods employed in tobacco culture. , Many land owners in this section, in fact, a-majority of them, have been for years what is known as land poor. The idea prevailed that as soon as the turpentine and lumber wes ex hausted front the land * that it was comparatively of ho value. The building of the Georgia South ern and Florida, however, established a new order of tilings. Thu mana gers of the road went systematically to work to demonstrate to the people Urhat die land was capable of pro during. The experimental farm was the result of this movement, and is to-day one of die most celebrated farms for the excellence and diversity of its crops in the South. The land holders have advanced from poverty to comparative wealth, and land Which sold a few years ago at from $1 to $2 -per acre finds now ready Hale at from $15 to $20. Thu crop hi which this section is most greatly interested just now is tobacco. It seems destined now to becpmn the main dependence of the farmers instead of cotton, which lias been the Staple prroduct, and gives every promise of redeeming that section of the state from povertyjaud of making It one of the moat productive ami Wealthiest of the land. ’ Messrs. II. If. snd W. O. Tift have planted this year, ou their farm at Tifton, forty-three acres of tobacco, Jiy actual measurement, made a few days ago, tho stalks of tobacco on ten acres of tho crop average five feet in height, and the leaves measure twen ty-eight inches in length and eighteen » inches in width. These ten acres, Which make the finest field mi the place, will average 1,500 pounds of leaf tobacco to tho acre. The gen era) average of the balance of the Crop will he 1,000 pounds per acre. This will make (in actual yield of 4S,- 000 pounds, which, at tho market .price of 20 cents per pound, will bring $9,<500 as the gross receipts for K p made on the entire forty-three cs. ^ .The cultivation of the crop ts not more expensive than cotton and nev r or more than 400 pounds of fertiliser • is used to tho acre. The most ox ; pensive feature of the crop is tho erection of bams for curing purposes. 'This requires a brick basoment with ; a steam engine and steam heating ■ pipes running through the walls of wooden superstructure. Having once .established these barns, however, they will last an indefinite length of time, The 'nett reeepts per acre, as esti mated front the Tift farm, are $140 ‘pet acre. The expense of the pro duction can be estimated from the data given above.- Twonty-Uiroo acres of tolmcco have been planted liy the Cycloneta farm, and are now in a prosperous condition. There is every prospect that south west Georgia will in a few years rival, if not surpass, Virginia in tho produc tion of this important crop—Macon Telegraph. ' Bncklts’s Arnica Salve. . A visit to tlie farm at Cycloneta is nCcdgsary if one is to form a proper idea of the work undertaken- by the Georgia Southern and Florida road. The pine lands through which tho road runs have long been regarded by people living in the upper part of the state as practically worthless for agricultural purposes, their only val ue lying in the’ pine forests which they bear. The.purpose of tho road in establishing the farm was to de monstrate in a manner wiiosc fair ness could not be disputed that this idea was a grossly erroneous one. No one who hns visited Cycloneta and Tifton can doubt that the demon stration is now complete. Crops of every kind—corn, cotton, garden vegetables, tobacco and fruits of many kinds—are produced in a per fection not often Been elsewhere. These superior crops are seen not only on the farm of the railroad com pany, but also oil those of private in dividuals, the only difference being that on tlie company’s farm a greater arfety is planted. This is natural, as tho latter exists for the purpose of allowing the many uses to which the lands can lie profitably put. The special purpose this year, how ever, is to show that tlie region pen etrated by the road is peculiarly adapted to the production of tobacco. The character of tho soil iH much the same as that of tlie North Carolina lands on which the best grades of tobacco are grown, and an inspection of the fields seems to prove that the experiment wilt bo eininently success ful. A lnrgo area is planted—near hundred acres in and around Tifton -and experts declare that no belter tobacco, so far as tlie appearance of the plants enable them to judge, is grown anywhere. Careful prepara tions for curing according to tho most improved methods have boon made. Tlie intelligent planters who visit ed the farm at tho invitation of the company last Saturday were evident ly very much impressed by wliat they aw. They realise the necessity of diversifying the crops of tho south and went to Cycloneta determined to see for themselves it tobacco could relied upon as a money-bringing crop. It is too much to say that they wore convinced and will immediate ly go into the tobacco raising busi ness; hut they will await the conclu sion of the experiment with a special personal interest in the result. Primarily tlie company is trying to boiicfit itself by an undertaking foreign to the ordinary business of a* railroad, but the work is never theless a patriotic one which should enlist the sympathy and support of every citizen of Geotgia and part-ieu- ;irly of the people of Macon. Noth ing better for the city can happen than a rapid development of the country through which the road runs and tho development will add great ly to the wealth and population of tlie state. If a new industry shall he established, Maeon will naturally be the center of the trade which it will create. IN THE REALM OF POLITICS. PROGRESS OF TH THREE CAMPAIGN JJITIES. Ihabkm.a, July 3.—A lively time, politically, is expected in the near future. Tlie Isabella correspondent of the Worth Local Iiiih lieen persist ent in his efforts to induce Mr. Slot- ens to define his political principles. In doing so, he has brought down upon his head the wrath of the third partyites, who at a recent meeting of the alliance tried,to pass resolutions calling a boycott upon a business with which they supposed the: cor respondent was connected. This they failed to do, because the alii- ancetticn of Worth are above such a thing, and then they commenced dc nouncing him from the stump and in the. county paper. This 1ms raised the correspondent's ire, and he has declared his intention of carrying the war into the enemy's camp. A lively time,is expected.
