It was esti- inaUsfrtlint there were live hundred IMN present, the grandmothers, (he mothers and the daughters of the Sturdy yeomanry of licrriuu county, and they are worn.cn worthy the highest encomiums passed upon them by the eloquent speakers of the day. The OaKKTik joins in the refrain, God bless the noble women of Her- rivn county! Third partyites made themselves Conspicuous by their absence. We do not mean to say there were no (h|td party people present. A few wei'e present ami only a few, demonstrating the truth of one of two facts, i. o., there are only a few Of these disciples in tint county, or they are following closely the com (hand of their dictatorial loaders: Do Dot road democratic newspapers; do not attend democratic barbecues and rallies, nor go to hear democratic Speeches. These leaders knew that “error cesses to be dangerous when ffuth is left to combat it," and they foot comparative safety so long ns (hoy can keep their followers beyond (lie precincts of political truth. Tho exorcises of the day was held tinder u truinoml'MiK bush arbor, pro pared for tlm occasion, located a short distance on the west side of town in A shady branch head. The location was Wisely selected and well arranged —the speakers' stand was placed on (ho decline of the hill with the .neb puce oil tho hillside ami in full view of tliu speakers. A small United States flag, in recognition of (lie an thority of tliu civil government, tloal- oil from a ten foot stall fastened to a tall pine sapling near the northeast corner of the arbor. As hail been previously announced lion. Iteiijamin 1C. Itussell, of llain- bridge, the slrsiglitoul democrat ir candidate for congress in tie seeoi d district, and lion. Win M Him iliond, of Thomnavillc, were present for the purpose of addressing the ' people. The meeting was ealli d to order by lion. Henry It. I'copies, chairman pf the ocunty democratic executive committee, and in a feiv well chosen Words introduced Mr. liussell to the gudivnoti. Mr. Itussell is a pleasant speukei gnd always charms Ids audience with |dn oratory. For an hour—after pay ing a beautiful tribute to the vast au dience of ladies present die discussed the issues of tlm campaign earnestly pud vigorously. Tlm platforms of the dumouralic, republican and peo ple's party were brought out on dress parade, figuratively speaking, and tmido to pass in review before the Vast audience of intelligent ladies and gentlemen. He indulged in no bit- (critesa or vituperation, lint he took Up tho prominent planks of these platforms and showed what tin sue cuss m the parties standing on them meant to the weal or woo uf this ftreat nation ami government. Our space will not permit us to give a morn extended report of Mr. Russell's eloquent and convincing speech. Hon. W. J,. Kcnnnn,of Adel, then stepped forward and introduced tlm silvory-tongiied orator of south Geor gia, lion. YV. M. Hammond. Thu audience could not resist the impres sion that )m felt, the inspiration of the occasion deep down in his soul. Capt. Hammond devoted the ma jor portion of his eloquent and log ical address to a discussion of tlm is sues involved in the campaign of the second congressional district. His speech was couched in the most c|a- gaiil language, some of his .sallies upon the opposing forces of straight- out democracy were actually painful, and yet tlui burning truth wan pre sented in such beautiful diction that no one could dare to take offense. Thu candidacy of O. H Stevens for congress was shown up in its true light. He showed that the commit tee appointed by the Cutlibort con ference to formulate and issito an ad dress to the people were largely third party material and a large majority of its members have since joined themselves to that party and arc oc cupying high official positions in it, for illustration. Dr. .J. II. I’ickett, of Worth, who is the chairman of tlm third party district campaign com mittee. Mr. Hiovoiih lias endeavored to loose himself from thin company but Ids efforts prove more and more futile; he is hound to it by a solemn pledge as “our [their] candidate.” Capt. Hammond defended the demo cratic party against the osperdonu directed by the oft repeated third party question, “YVliat has the de mocracy done for the relief of the people?’* and his defense was con vincing; he showed that ail the relief tlm people had ever received came from that source. The entire address was wi ll punctuated with rounds of applause. ('apt Hammond announced Mr. Russell's congressional caudidiiuy ti the people, paying a high tribute ti ids manly worth, bis uneomproniising democracy, ami bis strict fidelity to his fronds, lie said his friend, llus- sell, was too modest a man to speak in his own behalf, lb' urged the people llot l.o divide but to go to the primaries on July .'tilth and vote h„- slraighloiit democracy. July 13.—The sixth minim) session of the Georgia Weekly Press Association met here yesterday, and tho editors ure enjoying the sweets of Home to their utmost capacity. The eating and drinking have been so plentiful that the boys have dis carded their belts that they might give full vent to their feelings. Truly, Rome and Romans ure eit- tertuining the editors with lavish Imtida. Ho he it, fur thus was it promised. The editors were carried yesterday afternoon over the grounds imd through the hihiings of the Holmes’ sanitarium and expressed a surprise at its immensity. Dr. Holmes was loudly praised for tho charming man tier in which he entertained the “Knights of tlie Quill.” A grand banquet was also tendered the editors last night at the Arm strong hotel by tlie citizens of Rome. Tim beauty ami chivalry of Rome were present, which added in making the occasion a recherche affair. The afternoon session yesterday was was taken up in nppointi-g tbe vurious committees and electing of ficers to serve the ensuing year. The following were the officers elected: President—ii. IV. Roberts, of Spar ta. First vice-president—S. T. ]$!»- leek, of Franklin- Second vice-president—A. If. Ry- als, of McRae. Recording Secretary—W. A. Shackelford, of Lexington. Assistant recording secretary—I*. T. McCutoheon, of Franklin. Corresponding secretary- -Charles D. Darker, of Atlanta. Treasurer—J, \Y\ Anderson, of Covington. There were very few of the south Georgia editors present and their ab sence created some comment. [The Gackttk editor couldn't go because he had crowds o.' work on hand iwed- Nmvn UuragrapliK. Richard Crokor, lender of Tammany Hull, says: "It Is my candid opinion tlmt the democratic national ticket will lie elected beyond tlie shadow of n doubt, and tlmt It will carry New York state by tbe largest plurality ever given for a presidential candidate.” Hon.
