Ho had citizens arrested and impris oned on trumped up charges, and made them pay to be released, lie made the friends of I). K. Cox pay $300 for Ills ro lease. .Mr, Cox is dead, but Ills son, Ed it. Cox, is llviug here, and can testily to said facts. So can .Major .1. M, Stacey Mid Col. 8. E. iloso, friends of Cox who S aid part of the money, lie robbed Mr. uper Cox of *2,990 worth of spun thread. Jasper Cox is a reliable citizen of this county, and now lives near Ho- fieiihatn, Giles county, Tenn. He robbed John P. Williams, an old and tollable farmer and soldier of the Mexican war, of all bis hogs and meat. Jitr. Williams' noatoffiwjs this place. lie lmd lit. .1. C. Huberts, of this place, arrested, and tried to make him pay $3(K) for his release, hut after lie found out Hint the Doctor would not pay It turned him loose. The Doctor Is now living end will answer any letter. On January til, 18114, ho made the following parties pay him the sums opposite their names. 1 have- the original receipt he gave my father, Charles C. Abornelliy. Teneljers’' lnstltuto. -Tlio regular monthly mooting of tho Teachers' Institute of Berrien county met at Nashville on Saturday last at the regular hour of meeting. Prof. T. As tlio lecturers on geography and arithmetic were not present, it was postponed, and the remainder of the forenoon was very profitably occu pied by Prof. Guilliiuns, of Jasper, Fla., upon the subject of grammar] (the disputed points.) In the afternoon Prof. J. 11. Gary made some impromptu remarks upon tlio seicneo and practico of teaching. Prof. 11. C. Woodard was on tho program for a lecture, hut haying taken to himself a better halt" on Thursday last lie was excused. Then after a talk by Prof. Guilliams, tlio institute adjourned sine die. This is the last meeting of tho in- stltuto for this year and was well at tended.'
