Advertising is tho long |miIc tliut knocks down the persimmon, Tim CJakkttk urgently reqtiaiifs all its subscribers who ure in arrears to make prompt payment this fail, for the mutiny is biully needed to pay P editor's dulits. According In tlie Enterprise tlio negroes of Telfair county say “they linvo too mticli sense to join any party not recognized by tins best peo ple of tlm country.” The tax rate in Georgia for the present year is 4.H5 of olio per cent. Tills is a good showing for Governor Northon and democratic administra tion of tlm slate’s aifmrs. Arkansas lias gone democratic in Jmr slato election by the usual major ity, Tlm returns show that the third parly was an unknown quantify in tlm election, Tim bearing of llecclvor Wpiirks' petition to expend *■150.000 in the completion nf the Tifton and Thom- villo railroad was postponed from st Hf^knrddy until to-morrow. The Albany Ifnruld pniiliols that “Tom Watson will have a chronic fuse of soro-bcud after his defeat for congress In November, and two years from now lie will he an oiit-sjiokeo republican.” Tlm result of tlm Vermont state election was a greatly reduced major ity for tlm republicans, so ntuoh so that It is considered by politicians as It doubtful stale in the national elec tion. Tlio a A writ agrets with tlm Al bany Herald that “it Is about time for Boil KiirboI! to take off bis anal and begin a vigorous campaign, Tlm enemy is at wtfric in the Ncoornl dis trict.” A writer in tlm Allanla Herald says the prize lighters, Corbett and Sullivan, are on a level when iUr. .J. I4, Huberts' Candidacy. As tlio OXxnrre remarked last week tlm third party lins put for ward their best men us candidates for tlie legislature. In Berrien county the above named gentleman is tlm bearer of the honors. Mr. Huberts’ private character is good and he will, us nearly so possi ble, bring out to the polls tlm full strength of ilia party in the county, but lie cannot hope to secure a single democratic vote, which is undoubted ly necessary to ilia election, for his democratic opponent—Mr. H. II. Knight—is Ids peer in every respect, ■ind there is left no reasonable excuse for democrats to leave their party in order to vote for a III, and honorable candidate. Just why he has accepted to leud tlm forlorn hope of the tldrd .party in tins campaign Ids democratic per sonal friends cannot fully under stand or appreciate. He surely does not expect to ho elected, lie will not he, unless u most wonderful change lakes place in tlm sentimeut of the people or huiiiu vital issue in tlm campaign, and this is not probable. Tlm state campaign seems to be pro ceeding entirely upon national is sues and policies, and these arc so clear-cut and wcli-dclincd tliut tlm people had already, before Mr. Jtob- erlH 1 candidacy, settled In their minds what is their absolute duly in tlm piemises to themselves, their neigh bors, families ami country. Tlio result of tlm campaign will tend to Mr. Huberts’ humllitutioii in other ways than simply his defeat. It is possible he has not viewed Ins cundidaoy in all its healings, inis not considered tlm mutter in the light in which his friends, who ure oppos ed to him in this political campaign, have a reasonable ground to consider it. They look upon him as tlio ex ponent of Weaver, Post, and others, whose past unsavory record is a stencil in tlm nostrils of tlie son th em people, and properly so. They look upon his candidacy in the light of a friend taking up a cudgel and doing lialtie for the enemy. They believe that when lie comes to stir voy tlio situation fully he will not he a candidate on ulootion day. Fall and Whiter Announcement. We know it is early to commence talking to the people about buying Fall and Winter goods, but as the earliest impressions are tlm most lust ing we desire to impress atonce upon the people of Berrien, Irwin, Worth, Colquitt and Coffee counties that our store is headquarters for staple arid fancy dry goods, notions, clothing, hate, boots and shoes, in fact a full line of general merchandise. Our Mr. J. N. Griffin, with an ex perience of many years in the mer cantile business in Valdosta, and ful ly acquainted with the waute of tlie people of this particular section of country, lias just returned from the northen unil eastern markets where lie purchased the most complete stock of goods ever presented to tlm trade by any merchant or firm in tin's section, Our entire stock of goods was purchased at unprecedented bar gains and we ure giving onr custom ers tlm benefit of Mr. Griffin’s deal. We have just occupied our new, elegant and cupucioiis two-story brick building, and wo invite tlie people to call and see ns whether they buy anything or not. Our clerks are po lite and attentive, and ure always willing and anxious to show you our superb stock of goods—confident tliut our goods and prices cannot be duplicated m this country. The cry was that tlm report fur nished republican protection argu ment from ilemoorulio sources--Mr. Book being one of ex-Govenmr Hill's appointees. Republicans insist tlmt Mr. Peck's report proves the wisdom of the McKinley protective tariff, inasmuch as it shows that a greater volume of money lias been disbursed towago- earners at the great, iimiiiifaotitring centres of Now York than was paid out, within a given time under tho Mill's law passed during Cleveland's administration. But sumo tlm people have' quieted from tlio excitement incident, to the publication of tlio report, and hud lime to investigate tlm true situation, the early and stentorian republican cry has bocoitio vory feint and weary. They are now learning the lesson that “Things are nut always what they seem,” and that Mr. l’eok’s re port is merely an abstract showing and absolutely misleading. It is true there wiui moro money paid to wage-earners within a given period sinoo the McKinley bill be- oumu a jaw, as appears upon tlio fiteo of Mr. Peek’s report, llowuver, had lie gono into details, Ids report would also show that it required a greatly disproportionate number of wage- earners, ns well as hours of labor, to earn (Ids apparent, tncrease of wages.
