After all the hurrah of last Friday celebrating the four hundredth anni versary of the discovery of the iibw world by Columbus, it is a pertinent question to ask, why is tlin new non tlnonj nailed America? Thu numlidaoy of l)r. I- H. H. , candidates for congress In the ml dlstnot, met in joint debate last Saturday night, j was being introduced by recent convert near n to Tlio Cause of Public Schools lu Itcrricn County. The jieople of Berrien comity may la.' divided in sentiment upon some questions but the Gazkttk firmly believes that the cause of education is not one of them. Tlio unanimity with which two successive grand juries adopted the recommendation looking to tho es tablishment of a graded school sys tem for tlie county, supported by tliq regular public school fund and a small Jlreot property tax, to be en tirely free to all children of school itgy, speaks out this fact in no imcor- tain language. Jiut this action of tlio grand juries is not all that is necessary to put the nmohitiory of the new system in mo tion—the people must pass upon it by ballot at an election to bo ordered fay the Hon. F. M. Hmitli, Ordinary, and two-thirds of the qualified voters of tho county must vote in favor thereof, Then, under the law, the county hoard of education will be iiliJjiorlzGll to levy a fax not exceed ing ono-fourth of one per cent, ad valorem, on all the taxable property of the county, us appears by the di gest, for school purposes. For thfi convenience of voters this uti'cliwi will be called for tlio first Wednesday in January next, tho same lime ns the election for county ollluers, duo notice of whioli will be published in the (1AZETTB not less than four weeks prior to the election. Thorc are ninny reasons why the people of Berrien county should vote for and adopt tills graded system of public schools, but whioli cannot be dismissed here. The inuttor will be thoroughly ventilated before the elec tion, and so thoroughly explained to the voters that they cannot fail to vote Intelligently on the question. After all the political turmoil of the past few months this graded sys teill of soIiooIh is the one public qitesltgtt upon whioli all our people can agree; it can he umdu to cement, them together once mure in fraternal accord, flowers, and otherwise beautify it as a park. It wifi require' considerable work, but we believe the citizens will undertake it. In this matter the la dies should lie consulted os they have a bettor conception of flower-garden ing than men. The Gazkttk would be glad to have the sentiment of all the citizens, ladies und gentlemen, on this subject. Tifton should have a public park und the Gazette knows of no better or more equitable wuy of securing one than Cupt. Tift has suggested. A third matter which tins been suggested for the public good is the transformation of Hie present school into a graded one, conducted after the plan adopted by Quitman, Fort Valley, and other small cities, where patrons pay a uniform rate of tui tion of one dollar a month for all grades of scholars. This may not ho feasible in Tifton, but the ques tion is at luusl worthy of considera tion. Tho Gazette calls attention to these matters und leaves it for the citizens to say what they will do. lliicklcti’H Arnica Halve.
