EZZARD CONVICTED.
Of Ylolritlns: .v Drench of Promlae with
Intention to Commit it Larceny.
Some tinlo since tho Atlanta Jour
nal published a sensational article
relative to the arrest of one T. W.
Ezzard, a real estate, in Atlanta upon
extradition papers from South Caro
lina charging him with selling some
sdutil Georgia (Colqnitt county)
land, belonging to tho heirs of the
late Lewis llill now residing in that
state, and accounting for only a part
of tho price paid. Tho Journal’s ar
ticle connected Col. T. R. Perry, of
Ty Ty, with the transaction as par-
ticeps triminis with Ezzard. It also
connected Sir. John H. Norman! a
.real estate dealer-of Colquitt county,
with the deal in a most compromising
and unenviable way.
The Gazette mentioned the mat
ter at. the timo as nn item of news
and it created considerable conster
nation among the friends of Porry
and Norman, who Imped that they
would be able to clear their skirts of
the slimy transaction, t]ieir desire in
this particular 1ms been fully grati
fied; their innocehco have been es
tablished to tho satisfaction of all.
Col. Perry, however, had a very nar
row call, and but for his methodical
biisiness.habits of saving letters and
receipts he might now ho languish
ing in a criminal’s cell.
The history of tile whole matter,
together with the trial and convic
tion of Board, is briefly but fully
told in tho following letter - to the
.Savannah News from Barnwell, S.
C;, where the trial occurred:
Bauxwkli, S. C., Nov. 25.—For
soiiio months pnst the people here
have been anxiously awaiting the de
velopments in tho case of .the state
vs. T. \V. Ezzard of Georgia, which
has been pending in tiio court of this
county. As will ho rememborod
some timo ngo, extradition papers
wejc issued in this statu ngainst T.
W.,fEmrd, a real estate agent, and
T. 11'. Ferry, a prominent attorney of
south Georgia, by the heirs of Lewis
Hill, deceased, charging them with
grave offenses committed in this state
»till reference to the sale of certain
Imds in south Georgia to Judge i J.
II. Pope, for the Hill heirs.
Rzznvd was arrested in Atlanta,
Ga., and brought here whore ho has
been confined in jail over since in de
fault of $1,500 bail. Perry came
over voluntarily as soon ns lie heard
of the proceedings and by his receipts
and letters from Ezzard to him,
showed clearly to Col. W. I 1 . Mur

PAY THE TEACHERS.

There is good news for tho ban!
worked and poorly paid common
school teachers of Georgia."
Unless present promises tail they
will, commencing with next, year, he
paid their salaries quarterly in cash,

tlie yean
At the beginning of tho session,
Hon. II. W. J. Hum, of Hall, who is
an earnest friend of the teachers,
introduced in tho house a resolution
calling upon tho finance comnuttco
to report to tho house what legisla
tion was necessary to enable tlie
treasury to pay the tcaohcrs quarterly
and at the samo time avoid an in
crease in tho rate of taxation.
Being himself a tnembor of tlint
committee, Mr. 11am balled up his
resolution before the committee and
aroused a wide-spread interest m tlie
subject.
J’lio state treasurer came before
the cqnnnitteuon Mr. Ham’s invita
tion, and explained that the reason
the teachers could not bo paid quar
terly was that tho school fluid had of
necessity been used, year after year, to
pay tlie running expenses of the
state government, and that if he
wore required to pay tho teachers it
would cause a deficit in the state
treasury before noxt yer’s taxes would
come in.
This throw a damper on tho mat*
ter. Hut .Mr. Ham was not to bo put
down. He begun to cast about for
some way to get tho money to run
the state government, so ns to leave
the teachers' money in the treasury
to pay their salaries when duo. Hu
found that there was $1)08,000 of in
terest duo next year. •
He at once introduced a bill' to
fund this interest, had it rend and re
ferred to the finance committee and,
after a full discussion hv tlie ablest
* f
financiers of that committee, it was
reported back to the house with tlie
recommendation that it pass.
The bill was read the second time
yesterday,- and Mr. Haiti hopes to get
it through tho house to-day,
