Washington will be full of colonels
Saturday, and some of tin; colonels
will be full, too.
Maryland is trying to gobble up
live West Virginia counties. The
matter is in the courts.
Pension pillage is a steal! The
democratic full-pledged administra
tion should bear this in mind.
Good deeds constitute the only real
riches which one. may lay up in this
world. A bank full of such assets
never suspends.
Kickers, growlers mid demagogues
generally, ought to be sent to the
rear, when questions of progress are
up for discussion.
The higher and faster a poor fellow
Hies the worse he is disfigured when
bis wings fail him and be bits the
stony, unsympathetic earth.
With our orchards and vineyards
increased a thousand fold and a flour
ishing cannery in every county, the
financial outlook would lx; bettor.
Had roads cause the farmers losses
enough in one winter to more than
meet any possible road tax. Ami a
fellow has to be very ueak-wittud
nut to know it.
An appalling wave of violence and
shamelessness is sweeping over the
country. Every good and true man
and woman should do their utmost to
stay its progress.
The anti-oftion bill went to its
sleep yesterday. If the statesmen
who have undertaken the task of leg
islating I tetter times could only go
with it, there might be a better con
dition of things.
The editor of a Georgia paper says
that paper money is full of bacteria
and disease germs. At latest ac
count the editor, himsulf was in
line health, lie says it is umieeesary
for him to quarantine his office against
paper money. His subscribers pro
tect him amply m that respect.
“Gold in Georgia”—of course ill ;re
is. Every deep cut plow turns it up
on the mellow fallow. Every dew
drop that glitters around the preg
nant petals of pear bloom, jingle
with the chime of it. It veins the
loamy s >,1 and sands of the stale and
fillers the showers that fall from the
heavens. Georgia is a great slate if
wy could only learn tn list it as it is.
Now Try This.
It will cost you nothing and will
surely do you good, if you have a
cough, cold, or any trouble with
throat, chest or lungs. l)r. King's
New Discovery for consumption,
coughs and colds is guaranteed to
give relief, or money will he paid
back. Sufferers from La Grippe
found it just the tiling and under its
use had a speedy and perfect recove
ry. Try a sample bottle at our ex
pense and learn for yourself just how
good a thing it is. Trial bottles free

Light is Dawning.
When during the war, the impove
rished army of the Confederacy
called for food, it was Middle and
Southwest Georgia which gave it—
gave it in corn, in wheat, in oats, in
pork, in vegetables, and gave it
willingly and liberally.
For many weary months tins sec
tion stood a drain which proved its
worth, and caused it to he named the
“granary of the army.”
Is this to be repeated in this, the
hardest year the south has seen since
the era of its new born prosperity?
It would seem so.
"And it is all to come from a little
poach.Thosc who have not kept apace
with the marvelous strides of fruit
culture in this section will lie sur
prised to know the vast amount of
money invested in the industry.
Not a thousand, a hundred thous
and, hut many hundreds of thousands
of dollars are now invested in the
fruit business in Georgia—particu
larly the section contiguous to Macon.
Hundreds of thousands of peach
trees will come into bearing this
year which have never borne lie-
fore, and the peach crop promiea to
lie an enormous one. There is lit
tle danger, though, but that it will
pay as well as any 'previous one, as
arrangements are already perfected
to open the markets of the great
West to the Georgia peach, and Chi
cago alone will call for as much as
lias heretofore been raised in Georgia.
A prominent horticult urist who lias
investigated the matuw, has said that
if every acre adaptable to fruit cul
ture in Georgia was planted, it
would hardly make a drop in the
bucket of the demand. Heretofore
Georgia growers have confined their
shipments entirely to Philadelphia
and New York, and not exceeding
half a dozen cars have gone to the
West.
Georgia growers have found they
can successfully compete with Cali
fornia, and even get better prices for
their fruit, and it has stimulated
them to such a degree that the mir-

S. II. Clifford, New Cassel, Wis.,
was troubled with neuralgia and
rheumatism, his stomach wits disor
dered, Ids liver was atlected to an
alarming degree, appetite fell away,
and he was terribly reduced in flesh
and strength. Three buttles of Elec
tric Hitters cured him.
Edward Shepherd, Harrisburg, III.,
had a running sore on his leg of
eight years' standing. Used three
bottles of Electric Hitters and seven
boxes of Huckleu’s Arnica Salve, and"
his leg is sound and well. John
Speaker, Catawba, Ohio, had live-
large fever sores on his leg, doctors
saici he was incurable. One bottle
Electric Hitters and- one box Huck-

Macon, Man'll 1.—The conviction
is growing with many that tin- stock
of the .Macon Construction Company,
the concern that built the Georgia
Southern and Florida railroad sys
tem. will lie worth par again. One-
day it sold 3 1 for I, but when the
Georgia Southern was pul in the
hands of a receiver, the stock tumbled
and became practically worthless.
When the bonds were pooled Iasi
October, some bondholders sold their
construction stock at. Ill cents on the
dollar and pooled their bonds, under
tin- impression, no doubt, that the
pooled bonds were the only thing
connected with the Georgia Southern
system that would he worth any
thing. In this they were surely mis
taken. The very lowest estimate
now placed on the Georgia Southern
road proper, by those acquainted
with its value, is $5,000,0110, but
there are others who are thoroughly
informed concerning its condition
and worth, who say that it is to-day
richly worth $0,000,000, and may
even sell for more, than its worth by
reason of the competition among
trunk lines that will wish in (lie near
future to buy it. The road is only
bonded for JO,4*10,000 and has a very
small floating indebtedness, less than
<110,000. The capital stock of the
Macon Construction Company is
*500,000, but of comse, it has con
siderable debt. Yet, with the (leorgia
Southern road selling at *0,000,000,
all the debt of the road and all the
debt of the construction company can
ruadily lie paid, and leave a balance |
in excess of enough to make the stock
of the construction company bring
par, and, perhaps more. Those 'ac
quainted with the business of the
Georgia Southern and its manage
ment under the receiver, are very
hopeful of the outlook for the road
and Macon construction company.
Not only in the business of the road
steadily increasing, both in passenger
travel and freight traflie, hut the
physical condition of the road is be
ing kept up to the high standard. It
will lie a great, dav for Macon if con
struction stock again reaches far. It
will galvanize business, invigorate
trade, and make the arteries of the
commercial body of this city pulsate
with new life, new happiness and new
hojie.

There is not a better or truer
democrat in Georgia than Col. “Hill”
Harris, of Worth. Here arc his
views on the appointment of Gresham
as given in the Atlanta Journal:
Col. Hill Harris says as to the ap
pointment of Judge Gresham in Mr.
Cleveland's cabinet, “I am like the
old minister who, one Sunday on
opening the services of his church,
took up his hymn hook and a hymn
confronted him that some mischiev
ous boys had pasted neatly therein,
“Old daddy Grimes, that good old
man, is dead and gone,” he said:
"My beloved congregation, this hymn
book I have used for thirty years. I
never saw this hymn before, but it is
here and I ain’t going back on Ibis
by mil hook, you will therefore sing
it.” Mr. Cleveland is our president,
villi more sense, than any man I ever
knew or read of, and as a democrat
for forty years 1 have battled for de
mocracy, and though hut nil humble
private, I learned in two wars to
obey ni\' superior officers always.
Here’s to our president forever.”
