ALL SORTS OF THINGS.
GATHERED FftOM THE COLUMNS QF
OUR EXCHANGES.
Facts, Fancies and News Hems Selected
For tlie Special Use of the Head*
er» of the (iuzette.
Xow let the fltiiuMtvl plank of the
democratic platform be carried out
to the letter. Then there will be no
cause for dissatisfaction or division.
No democrat can afford to offer less,
and no democrat should be willing
to demand anything more.
President Cleveland is going to
make a big mistake if he fails to call a
special session of congress. If lie
and a democratic house and senate
were elected because the democrats
pledged the people to institute cer
tain reforms, then common sense and
common honesty dictate that those
reforms should be set on foot as soon
as possible.
People have not been looking at
the road question from the right
point of view. The roads belong to
tlie county, and it is the business of
the managers of the county property
to see to it that they are kept in lirst-
cl.-.ss order. Hut the enmity pays for
immovements on her other property.
- —Why should roads be an exception
to the rule?
The shrike, butcherbird, or French
mocking bird—just as you choose to
call it—is the most valuable friend
and ally to the gardener and orehard-
ist of the feathery tribe, it lives
chiefly on worms, lmgs and beetles,
and never troubles gruir, fruit or
vegetables of any kind. It is none
the worse for its reputation that it
sometimes makes a meal on young
Knghsli sparrows.
Postmaster General liissoll is ac
credited with the announcement tiial
no local business men need apply for
postofliees under his administration,
lie objects to commissioning local
business men as postmasters, for
reason that the actual duties arc per
formed by irresponsible, and often in
competent clerks and substitutes.
A postmaster under Mr. llissell must
pioniise to devote his entire time to
the work, and personally keep strict

Not Wanted.
Thu democracy is now paying the
of popularity. Us position
ns the dominant party is attracting to
it some aggravatin^ly undesirable
elements.
Just tlie other day, John S. Wise
announced, according to u Itu-limoml
paper, that he had become a Cleve
land democrat.^
Now conics “Al” Daggett, the no
torious Brooklyn republican, who de
clares that lie has left the (!. O. 1*.
for good and all, and now loudly
proclaims himself a democrat. Dag
gett is the man who had the contract,
for supplying the country with pos
tal cards not long ago, and who cre
ated a scandal by the inferior quality
of the cards lie Inrnished. He has
been a clerk in the state department,
a deputy of internal revenue, an un
der sheriff, a sheriff of Kings county,
a government weighing contractor
and a state senator, all under repub
lican regimes.
The democracy lias nothing to
gam from such accessions as these.
They are of no importance save as
indicating the tendency of the times,
and the party would be much better
off without them. - Atlanta Journal.

Nothin}.' Like Yellow I'nio.
There’s nothing like yellow pine.
A beam of it, 10 inches square by 17
feet long well a victory over iron,
steel and other materials used in the
construction of a big pressure testing i j n
machine at St. Louis the other day.
Washington University, in the city
mentioned, had recently built what
purported to be a 1,(100,000-pound
testing machine in its department of
civil engineering. The purpose of
such machines is to test the strength
of materials that may be put in bridges,
trusses, etc. This particular machine
was on the hydraulic press principle,
and was operated on with oil in the
cylinder. When the 10 inch piece
of yellow pine was put in lo he tested
the engineers ill attendance knew
that the great machine had an aglag-
• onist worthy of its best efforts. Hut
« they did not anticipate u hat hap
pened. Up to a pressure of 200,000
pounds there was not a creak or
groan front either machine or timber.
At 280,000 pounds the pine began to
bend just the least bit, and there
were two or three sharp raps, as
though sonic one had struck the ma
chine with a hammer. At 800,000
the end came. • Willi a terrible crash
the great machine flew into a thous
and pieces. And the pine beam re
sumed its straight, lines. It is not
known that the timber was of Georg
ia pine, but it. must have been. Thai
is the kind of pine it grows. And if it
was indeed the Georgia product the
only way the engines will ever break
it will be by making their testing
machine of Georgia pine.—-They
waste time when they try it, with
irotf or steel.- Savannah Nctt v
