Some fear lias been suggested thill
the newspapers are becoming elll-
eiriil, schools for the dissemination of
slang. The fear is not groundless
and, we regret to say, the great dai
lies are the universities that add the
finishing touches to the people's
slang education. Commonplace vul
garisms are entirely unnecessary to
the entertainment of the reader.
The failures of banks now-a-davs
are more alarmingly frequent than
surprising, for there are more hanks

the country were divided by two, one

other in productive industries it
would be better for the investors and

become extinct—except where some

Tlic Inter-County Fair.
The Oa/.kttk is agitating the mat
ter of an inter-county fair for the
counties of Berrien, Irwin, Worth
and Colquitt, to he held at Tifton.
Such a fair would he a potent fac
tor in advertising southwest Georgia,
and Worth will do her part towards
making it a success.—Worth County
laical.
What our contemporary has to say
of the project rings of the right
metal. The GaZKTTK was assured
all the while that the Worth county
people would take an interest in the
matter and help to make it, a grand
success. Woith county lias many
citiaens whose experience in agricul
tural and industrial fairs have taught
them how necessary they are to
stimulate the farming classes to
reach out after the greatest possible
perfection in theirchoscn vocations—
the noblest known to limn. The Ga-
Zkttk is glad to stale that several
Worth county gentlemen have al
ready signified lln-ir willingness to
uni in forwarding the measure.
The fuct is too apparent to admit
of discussion that a greater popula
tion is needed in all the counties
mentioned to secure that man-rial
progress which is so much desired.
Would the Gaxkttk miss the proper
proportion in saving tliut not more
Ilian one fourth of the acreage in
these counties are in cultivation?
Emphatically, t,o. There is too much
idle land here, and as the Cordclcan
says “we want thrifty, energetic
farmers to come mid occupy them
as fast as the saw mill men clear
them of the timber.” This condition
does not exist because of the worth
lessness of the laud—experiments
have dissipated this fallacy—hut tie-
cause ilie- cnuii'.ry is comparatively
new, and its resources and possibili
ties are practically unknown to peo
ple abroad and unknown and titiup-
precialed by many of the people who
live here. Development of tbe
country iH going forward slowly but
surely, it is true, but wluit we need
is the impetus which an increased
population alone can furnish. The
Ga/.ktth can think of no better
method of nailing dilect attention to
Ibis sect ion and securing tbe needed
increase of population Ilian toileninn-
Hlrale its possibilities by a thorough
exhibit of its resources at some cell-
mil accessible point,
Tbe question limy lie asked, call
the people who are desirous of chang
ing their location lie induced to come
anil see the exhibit? Yes, there are
hundreds uf people who have tlirir
eyes turned in Huh direction who are
anxious for an opportunity to see Hie
resources of mint ti Georgia; if Hie ex
hibit enu be made as luifi been indi
cated, at some accessible point, and
the time and place thoroughly adver
tised so that these people call 11ml it
out there is no sort of doubt about
their coming to si e it.
This inter-county fair offers the
best and grandest opportunity for
individual citizens to do soinelliing
for llii* betterment of their section of
country limn any other enterprise
of which the (I v/.ktti. can conceive.
So, let’s up and to the work!

The Macon Telegraph'll write-up
