There has never be“ii a time within
our recollection when the poor of
our Country needed the kind offices
of their employer* more than now.
Thu yellow fever scare at Ifriiiis-
wiok, the depressed money market
and the low price of their product
have forced quite all the lumber
mills of this section 16 shut, down
indefinitely ami throw hundreds of
people out of employment.
A large proportion of these em
ployes, from one cause or another,
are notiii position to carry themselves
over for thirty or sixty days without
suffering. They must do something,
they must make some deal, to keep
their families from want—even if
they have to move away, resulting in
a disorganization of the mill forces.
It seems to us that, the proper
thing for the owners of the mills to
do, just at this juncture, is to try to
furnish work to those of their em
ployes who cannot carry themselves,
and thus bridge, over and keep their
forces together until active opera
tions begin again.
We suggest, with all dltedeferet.ee
lo the superior wisdom of our mill
men, that a line opportunity is now
afforded for general repairs of their
milling plant, repairing and extend
ing their tramways, etc., ami by
eiplitahly dividing this extra work'e^" 1
among their dependent employes
they can avert much suffering and
general demoralization.
