merchants to plant their advertise

The bill collectors have been on
the rampage this week, and the debt
or class have been making excuses.
Tifton merchants don’t handle
“clearing house certificates.” They
pay Uucle .Sam’s currency for cotton.
Our merchants are all receiving
plenty of new fall and winter goods,
and they should tell the people
about them.
. When you want any kind of job

Obituary.
Mrs. Mary Matthews, nek Miss McOra
nle,was Hjrn in Meriicu County, Geor
gin, May trull 18117.
As a child she was olicilli nt,gentle and
loving, and her friends of childhood were
many.
When young she was converted, and
joined the M. E. Church South. She was
an earnest, consistent member ns long as
she lived, .tan, 29th. '8(11, she was mar
ried to Mr. John b. Mathews, of Berrien
County, with whom she lived happily
until her death, August llth, 18(18. Sic
was a greut sufferer all of her life, hardly
knowing wlml a well day was. She was
not confined to her bed all of the time
hut hardly well enough to tie up. Her
last illness was accompanied liy the most
intense suffering and excruciating pain
but without one murmur she linro all,
convincing every one of her faith in
Christ and submission to Ilis will.
She lielleved that she would die from
the first, and was a little anxious for the
time to come, yet she patiently awaited
the summon*. Her faith In Christ made
her a strong worker all of her life. Many
a dark place was made bright for her
husband. Many a child, and poor (for
she loved these) was encouraged, cheered
and strengthened She unselfishly did her
work well, and was ready to go, when
coiled. She told loved ones not lo weep
nor pray for her recovery.
I have been her pastor itt 1887, 1892
anil this vear, and always found her
ready lo do, or suffer God’s will. She
told me several times while she was rick
jast thin all was well as to the future,
nnd talked quietly about death. She was
not alaimed in the least, and when the
time came, with the shout; ‘ Glory Halle
luiah!” on her l’.pj, she passed from earth
U> heaven.
We weep not as those who have no
hope, but while she Is missed in the com
munity, in the church, and most of all
in the home: we rejoice that she lives
with Christ in glory. Her husluml, sis-
Igrs relatives and friends have our most
heartfelt sympathy in this sad licreave-
ment.
We'll trust Hhii la storms,
As well as In tiie calm;
Oi’V hope Is lirigtit and string,
We'll meet mir loved again.

Observations by Regular.
1 notice—
That times are still hard, money
scarce and provisions high.
That the ntillenium is not yet at
hand, not even dawning.
That crime, of all grades, is on the
increase; and, according to the words
of a very ancient book, wicked men
and seducers are growing worse and
worse.
That our country is in a very bad
condition in any way it can bo
viewed—politically, financially, so
daily, morally ami religiously—am
I verily believe that nothing short of
a judgment from God, and that in a
fearful form, will ever humiliate this
people and cause them to quit their
crookedness,
That greed for riches nnd love of
money lias very nearly drowned out
ill human sympathy, and that the
milk of human kindness Hows in a
very small stream, very' slow, and up
hill nil tiie way.
On Monday of week before last,
I was called to the town of Cecil on
a business trip. I met there, for the
first timo, our “Bohemian” of the
Gazkttk. I was very much pleased
to meet him, I have read a great
many of his interesting articles with
pleasure and now, since meeting him,
I shall read bis writings with re
newed zest. 1 found Cecil to be
quite a nice little town, located on
the Georgia Southern nnd Florida
railroad twenty-nine miles south of
Tifton. Tiie people whom I met
there appear hospitable and kind.
I formed a few new acquaintances
while there, notably among them
were Drs. Folsom and Gregory.
