Admiral DoOama, tho Itra/.iliim
insurgent, Iiiih discovered that in fir
ing upon the United States merchant
vessels lie decidedly “got Ins foot in
it.” Admiral Honhatn deserves the
admiration and thanks of his country
men.
A tremendous slugging match is
(hi between the rights of the masses
and the privileges of the classes. The
combat will he long and stubborn, but
the rights of the masses will eventual
ly prevail. Then, indeed and in
truth, will the principles of true de
mocracy administer public alTaits of
these United Hiatus.
God save democracy from its pre
tended friends! The man who calls
himself a democrat and lends his in-
ilHence against low tariff, the. aboli-
t.on of national hanks, the repeal of
the 10 per cent, tax on state hank
ionics, the imposition ol an income
tax and economy in the administra
tion of government is a pretended
friend.
The South (Icorgia Sentinel, of
Conlclc, gives this true and timely
advice: “The young man who has a
j ill in these times of depression is
fortunate. J/o should keep it by all
means. If the boss threatens to turn
you off to reduce expenses, tell him
you will slay for a less salary. As
lfillg as lie will pay yon enough to live
on, even mcagcrly, keep the job.”
I tun’s review for the past week is
upon our table. It reports iltifi coin
iilcrciul failures in the United Slates
for the week against lififi last year. It
reports further that trade is gradual
ly reaching its normal proportions,
mid that business has received afresh
impulse by the success of ihcTrcttsitry
in obtaining gold for its reserve thus
MreiigthiTiing eonlldenee in its ability
In nmiiitaiii gold payments.
The Slate Agricultural Society
meets in ilrunswick I'Vlirunry M and,
us usual, is to he oomiucled as a po
litical machine to further the cause of
curtain aspirants forolllco, The <!,\-
JiiCTTH reach'.is this conclusion from
letters received recently. Is there any
wonder that the railroads declined lo
issue passes lo persons attending the
convention? According to our bleu
of the “eternal Illness of things” the
f'lilroails have acted ipiite right.
It is a great pity that, the ob
jects of the institution should he thus
perverted.
<iov. Northen was quite right m
the precaution lie uscil to prevent
the Corbett.-.Mitchell pri/.c light, be
ing “pulled off” on (Icorgia soil,
which was rendered uiiiieeessiiiy
simply because (iov. Mitchell, of
Florida, lacked Iho courage of what
appeared lo he his conviction. A
preventive that could not have pre
vented, hail its use been necessary,
Would have been sheer folly. Thole

lining forewarned (lov. Northen fore
tinned himself to save the fair escut
cheon of (icorgia from being tarnish
ed, and the Ga/.kttk is proud that
be showed to the world his deter
mination to prevent the “mill" with
in liis jurisdiction meant, something
more than idle talk and braggadocio.
Mr. C. F. Davis, editor of the ltloom-

MIDSUMMKlt FA1 It.
There has been much said and
some work done toward the inaugu
ration of an inter-county fair at Tif
ton, and as the (rAXltTTB is always
ready to do wdiat it can to forward
the best interests of the city and vi
cinity it would respectfully suggest
that, as a preliminary step toward the
inter-county fair, a midsummer fair
and festival lie held some time dur
ing the month of .Inly,
At this fair, held in midsummer,
the people would he afforded an op
portunity to exhibit such products
—melons, fruits and vegetables—as
could lint and would not he display
ed later in the season when it is reas
onable to suppose the intcr-county
fair would he held.
The objects in holding an agricult
Ural or horticultural fair are two-fold.
First, to show the outside world—the
people whom it is desirable lo secure
as immigrants—The varied products
of the soil and the perfection in
which they are grown. And, sec
ond, to create a pleasant rivalry be
tween exhibitors and stimulate them
to greater efforts to excel in their
most honorable vocation.
It can lie readily seen that, because
of the varied products coining in
nearly every month of the year, ncitli-
et of the objects suggested can ho at
tained by a single fair held in the
full seasoii.
liy all moans let's have the mid
summer fair and festival and invite
our Northern and Western friends to
visit us at a time when they mill lie
shown the excellent fruits of our
orchards, vineyards and truck fiirmes,
when they can experience an ocular
demonstration of the possibilities of
our soil for fruit growing. The
railroads will he only too glad togivu
very low excursion rates.

NEWSPAPER CHANGES. ,
The Worth Gouty Local came to
us last week ill a new form—eight
pages, half home print—and we think
a very attractive one. Mr. John L.
Herring, who has been a valuable at
tached of the paper for the past year,
has taken an interest in the paper
And becomes co-editor and publisher.
He is a Worth county young gentle
man, who has engaged in the news
paper business because lie loves it—a
very necessary element to suecsss—
and wu expect much to grow out of
his addition to the editorial staff of
the paper. lie will look well after
the internal while Editor W. A. Al
len devotes the greater part of his
time lo the external necessities of
their business. The paper deserves,
and wo believe will receive the un
stinted support of the good people of
Worth county.

The Itidian-Springs Flovilla En
terprise, has departed this life to make
room for the National Headlight—a
dyed-in-the-wool Populist paper—
and, with the change, Editor W. E.
Cherry has departed the editorial tri-
|iod at least for a time. The Head
light is edited by Messrs. Smith, Mrs.
Smith and Miss Smith, if not the en
tire Smith family. The political ed
itor, W. E. Smith, hints that ho ex
pects to have a lot of fun if he does
not make any money by his venture
in journalism, lie says lie is consci
entious in Ids undertaking, hot wo
think he has mistaken the dictations
of misguided judgment for a call to
discharge conscientious duly.

GEORGIA PROGRESS.
Speaking of llic wonderful pros
perity that is fast coming to middle
and south Georgia from the inaugu
ration of llie fruit and vegetable in
dustry, the Macon Telegraph prints
this encouraging paragraph:
Thu day is not far off when the
land hungry multitude* which have
crowded t he arid plains of Oklahoma,
of Nebraska, Montana and the other
Northwestern stales will awake lo
the fuel, that here in middle and
southern Georgia we have land
enough for them all, at. a cost little,
if any, greater titan that thrown open
for seitlenieiil by the government,
which by llie most inexpensive meth
ods of cultivation will grow anything
from llcrmiidii grass to Eiherta
peaches; where snow is practically
unknown and where for more than
three hundred days in (lie year an
overcoat is a burden. When they
do discover these facts, middle ami
south Georgia will lie transformed
into one leg garden and orchard,
peopled by the happiest, most pros
perous people on tlio globe.
