manufactories, and ail home institu
tions. That's tlie way to build up,a
town.
Pear trees while in bloom should
never have the soil plowed or stired
as it causes them to drop tliqir
blooms.
The farmer who makes his own
supplies this year will be independ
ent next year. This is a safe pre
diction.
Don’t kick about a little rain.
This would be a Sahara desert in a
few years if the gentle showers did
not fall now and then.
It is said that the reason why the
young men often holds their sweet
heart’s hand while calling, is to keep
them away from the piano.
An exchange gives this timely ad
vice: “Bluebirds, the reputed liar
Lingers of spring, are on hand,— but
don’t throw away your overcoat.”
The weather report published on
this page last week will be a revela
tion to many people who will take
the to give it a careful examination
It is a rare thing now-a-days to see
a passenger train that does not carry
one or more drummers. Verily, lie
is next to ubiquitous; he is every
wliero.
A fine shower of rain fell during
Saturday night in the vicinity of Tif-
ton, and the next day the weather
was bright and cool. Fruit growers
were made happy.
The most effective way of feeding
a winter cow is to have some rough
forage cut up and mixed directly
with tlie grain enabling tier to throw
back and re-chew.
Mr. M. K. Lindsey, Berrien conn
ty’s efficient surveyor, was working
in this vicinity last week surveying
some Irwin county lands for Capt.
II. II. Tift and others.
The advertising patronage the CJa
sticTru is receiving attests its value as
a medium of communication between
the seller mid the buyer. It is pre
eminently the peoples’ paper.
Saint Valentine’s day will be here,
as customary, 011 tlie 14th of Februa
ry; and then tiie tender, loving miss
ives, will be fiying through tlie—
- mails. But what of the comic va
riety ?
A few families in Tifton and vicin
ity have not subscribed for the (!a
7.KTTK. This should not he said of
them much longer. They get the
benefit of tlie paper and should hd|
to support it. You see ?
Mr. (). M. Tift went to Brim
swick last week, it is said on a very
important mission, lie is as mute as
a mouse since lie returned; hence, the
result of tlie visit is unknown. Hope
It was a success, however.
While howling blizzards and blind
ing snow storm Were sweeping over
tlie North and Northwest last'week,
south Georgia was bathed in soft
southern sun-light. Moral: Come
south; yes, come to Tifton.

v. There is a growing interest in the
winter resort business all over the
south. Tlie outlook is that tlie Sadie
Hotel, of this city will Ik- crowded to
overflowing next winter and empha
size the demand for a large winter
resort hotel in Tifton.
Tifton is progressing in material
improvements and, with tlie liberal
advertising of which she is the recip
ient, the next five years will develop
a growth of prosperity and popula
tion never dreamed of by her most
ardent friends and admirers. Just
watch her grow.
Kcv. J. J. Adams, from North Caro
lina, who is well and favorably known
atTittoii and Sparks, having preached
at both places, was recently called to
tlie pastorate of Leary Baptist church,
in Calhoun county, necessitating his
ordination to the full work of the
gospel ministry. This was done at
Albany two weeks ago. The Ga
zette wishes him great .success in
winning souls to Jesus.
Tifton’s Institutions.
There is no enterprise in the city
Unit should receive the earnest sup
port of right-thinking citizens more
than the city’s institution of learning
Tifton Institute.
I
The “Tifton Educational Company”
has erected a budding that is not on
ly commodious and comfortable but
an ornament, to the city—a building
that would do credit to a much 'lar
ger place than Tifton, and few cities
of her size and pretension can boast
of so good an one.
This building has been turned over
to the citizens of the city and vicinity
for educational purposes during the
ensuing ten months, with no reserva-
Dtis except that Prof. E. J. Williams,
Jr., should be given first preference
as principal—lie agreeing to step aside
should ho not give general satisfaction
as an instructor—It was not expected
that he would give entire satisfaction
that nobody would be displeased—
such a thing is an impossibility.
We demonstrated last week that
the tuition rates were as low as cir
cumstances would permit. We have
heard no serious complaint of his con
duct of the school; on the contrary a
great majority of the patrons are
highly pleased with not only his
method of instructing their children
but the thorough discipline he main
tains.
The Gazette can see no good rea
son why tlie Tifton Institute should
not become the first and best institu
tion of learning in Berrien county,
and it would if tlie people will lay
aside the little prejudices they may
have and give it a cordial support.
Every citizen should take a pride in
so doing.

Tlie Hun From Jacksonville to Savannah,
I V-i Mllr*, In Three Ilnur*, Two Minutes.
Savannah, Ua.Jnn.2r 1804—The Her
ald's special Ilyer o> er the Plant si stem
from Jacksonville to Savannah yesterday
is the sensation of the day in Ibis city
and section. As early as five o'clock in
the nfternoon crowds began to assemble
nt Hie station to greet the train which 1ms
won for the Herald the greatest piece of
newspaper enterprise ever attempted In
the south. The truin left Jacksonville
from the Savannah, Florida and Western
depot, which is nearly nve miles from the
scene of the light, at nine minutes past
three, and made the run of 172 miles in
three hours and tx\ v o minutes, actual run
ning time. Tho fastest time on the trip
was made in n distance of thirty-five
miles in thirty-four minutes. Tho offic
ials are jubilant over the time made,
which Is the best on record of the road
The train consisted of the engine and
one coach, the latter being Vice President
Haines' private car,was in chargo of Con
ductor W. H. Wright, who usually runs
the Florida and New York vestibule, and
one of the most polite and attentive
employees of the road. Engineer R. J-
Walsh, who handled the throttle of en-
nlgc No. (10, is one of the most reliable
engineers of tho South and Is known as
a man to make record for fast time al
ways. He is the hero of the road to day
at\d said to me to-night:—"Tell the Her
ald that I would have made the trip In
180 minutes hut for a hot eccentric which
delayed us over twenty minutes" Be
sides the Herald men on the train were
II. E. Hutchins, assistent master of trans
portation of the Savannah Florida and
Western railrond, and II. C. McFaddcn,
chief clerk to General Passenger Agent
W. M. Davidson. On all sides can be
beard nothing but words of praise and
surprise "that the Herald should accom
plish such u wonder feat of gathering
news. At nil (lie hotels last night the talk
was of the Herald’s special fast ilyer.
WHAT THE NEWS SAVR.
The Morning News to day said:—"llo-
forc seven o'clock last night the Herald's
special train over the Savannah Florida
and Western railroad was in Savannah
with its special correspondence abroad
making the running time In three hours
and two minutes, a distance of 172 miles.
Die object of tho Herald's correspondents
in taking a special train to reach Savan
nah was to secure possession of the Pos
tal Telegraph Cable Company’s wires at
Ibis point, there being only one office at
Jacksonville, that of the Western Union.
All arrangements for the train bad been
made before the tight. As soon as it was
over a carriage of two fast horses, which
luul been waiting, was taken by the cor
respondents and trainmen and fast lima
made to the depot, where ti e train was
in waiting.
KI.EW I'AHT THE TltOOPEllS
"Tlie train shot by the Georgia troopers
who were drawn up in line along side the
track at Folkston, at the rate of sixty
miles an hour. The soldiers probably
thought the lighters were aboard, as they
gazed nt the train with longing oyes."
“The arrival of the train nt the Savan
nah Florida and Western depot created
considerable excitement as the crowd
there felt certain ilmt (lie champion was
aboard. It wns a mistake however as
tlie train brought only a handful of on
terprising newspaper men and equal en
terprising railroad men."
WHY THE IIKIIAI.il “OUTS TIIKIIK”
Speaking of tlie lleiuld's splendid
achievement, Pleasant A. Slowoll, editor
of the Savnunnh Evening Press, says:—
"The Herald's special train yesterday was
a plcco of newspaper enterprise anti fair
ly dazzles the people down here. It has
divided Interest with the Corbet light
People now understand why the Herald
‘gets there’ first with tho most news
The Herald’s big heat was truly (ho

the road. Superintendent H. G. Fleming
and Traffic ManagerC. I). Gwens, togeth
