Editor Independent: As nmuoii
ous friends have bivn uwpiiring about
this section of country and us many
others of my old friends and ae.ipmln
tances might like in hoar of this plant
1 will try to tell, without any color
lug whatever, something about this
interesting country through the col
minis of your valuable paper.
Tifton, Gil., is loeateil in the smith
western part of the state, on the high
ridge of laud running southwar
through tlie state, the water shed i
tlie Flint and song tabled Suwannee
rivors and the Hout.hrru terminus of
tlie Mine liidge mountains. Tlie laud
Ih gently rolling, affording good
drainage and absence of Hwuinps.
Tito soil is sandy loam interspersed
with small brown pebbles, which dis
integrate and enrich the soil. It. is
friable and easy cultivated and has a
e.lay nub-soil, which retains moisture
to a remarkable degree. Must and
mud are oonHpioious by their absence.
I’liro free stone water is abundant.
The humidity of the atmosphere is
quite uniform and the annual mean
temperature is 06°; the same of that,
renowned Miversido California or
MHithorn Italy or Greece. The rain
fall is about -10 inches, well distribu
ted throughout the year. The high
est temperature usually reached is
100°, the H.ame as that of northern
states, while the lowest temperature
HHiially reached is 20°. This winter
»o far it has not fallen below 24 and
during the day is so warm that one
can run around in Inn shirt sleeves,
yellow fever has never been known
hero and during the Brunswick epi
demic, Tifton threw her doors open
to Ih* refugees, Without any ovil eon
sequence, while cities lying on lower
ground quarantined again it, It is
also free, from malaria and other con
tagious diseases owing to its elevation,
good drainage and location - among
the pines. The death rate is less than
onc-iialf that of the northern states
and coast districts tinder similar con
ditions. All kinds of vegetables and
gcncrM farm crops, tobacco, cotton
and sugar cane do well. The range
of products is as large as may be
found anywhere in the United States.
The soil and climate are remarkably
adapted to fruit culture. Eminent
horticulturist and nurserymen who
have visited this traction, have express
ed their praise In the highest tones
md have most sanguine faith in its
future. It is a place that seems to
please all that visit it, and they go
home sounding its praises. The prof
its on fruit are large, from *101) to
*1,000 per acre, and the profits made
in growing garden truck, vary from
$50 to *1100.
They have good railroad facilities
being located at the junction of the
Brunswick ifc Western railroad and
the Georgia Southern & Florida rail-
oad, with a third linn nearly finished
It is but <10 hours’ ride to New York
and !l(i hours’ rule to Chicago.
In 1800 this place had a popula
tion of 200; today it has 1,200, and is
h til I growing rapidly and is provided
with good hotels, schools and church
es. Land may bo bought here for
from *5 tojllO per acre, according to
oention, ami all things considered is
tlie cheapest in tlie United States.
This section possesses a varied dim
ale like California, is similar in many
respects, hut free from sundry disad
vantages pertaining to that country.
I’hc frequent, showers render irriga
tion unneoossary, making the cost of
cultivation and production of land
much less. The fruit iH about one
month earlier than that of California
and brings about three or four limes
is Hindi. It is only about ono-ltnlf
as far from the large eastern markets
Transportation cost only about otto
half as much, mid the fruit arrives in
jilioul one-third tlie time, thus enab
ling the fruit to lie picked riper and
to arrive in belter condition and have
a superior llavor. Noli irrigated fruits
have superior llavor and keeping
pialilies. Lund costs less than ono-
tenth ns nmeh as California lands,
ud ono-fourth us much, and lumber
one half us much. Labor is also
much cheaper.
I liuvu traveled in California and
studied its products, and 1 find that
we have a California almost at our
doors. This is a laud of sunshine, ami
free from thu despondency produced
by the gloom of northern winters.
There is an average of 1100 days of
sunshine. In 181)2 there was only
<17 cloudy days. Mow different it is
in the noiilil The balmy and healing
inlluoneo of tlie Imig-lcufed pine is
always present, while the heat, of
summer is tempered by the cool gulf
breeze, The evenings are uniformly
cool yet not chilly like many parts of
California, so that them is net a night,
in the whole year when one cannot,
enjoy pleasant.anil refreshing dumber.
People suffering front uatarrhal,
pulmonary and rhciimntio troubles
are usually markedly lieiiolUtod in
this dimate. The winters tiro ho tnihl
and pleasant that one can always
work outside in their shirt sleovas.
Stock grazes all the year round.
Ulowor.s are abundant, and may be
had at any time of the year growing
in the garden. Song birds, lish and
game are plentiful.
Several crops may be produced on
the same ground the same year and
may he hud about four to six weeks
earlier than along the California
coasts, where many vegetables are
grown for nortlien markets. Tlie Mrs!,
and finest peaches are shipped from
litis section and have sold in northern
markets as high ns six dollars per
bushel. I'lio finest and largest, peach
orchards in the world are located in
southern Georgia and it, has been fitly
named the “1’enelt Paradise,”
This soil lias been considered by
experts ns a perfect tohneon soil ami
produces as line tobacco uh oun be
grown in the United Suites and will
produce two crops the same your,
Profits on tolmooo vary from *100 to
•500 per acre. This section is fast
being settled by northern people.
Mouses can ho built for less than otic,
half what they ran in the north and
living Is oho»p. 'I'lte people that, first
settled this country welcome not in
enters, are hospitable and law abiding
citizens, far from what they have been
represented to be in the north. It is
pinch easier to make a living than in
the north on farms, and work can be
carried on with less loss of time. I
am delighted with the country and
its prosper,Is and would much rather
live here than in the north. Any one
desiring any further information
about this place, can write to mo or
Mr. W, S, Louther, formerly of
Wilkinsburg, and we will do all wo
can to answet their inquiries. We
are not real estate agents, but desire
to help our old friends and acquaint
ances to a good home,with a pleasant
ditunic and bright future and profit
able present.
