ABOUT THE COUNTY.
Items Which Escaped the Attention of
Our Special Reporters.
The “Holiness Tent” has been re
moved from Sparks to Ashburn.
The Borden saw mill, near Lenox,
is rapidly being put in shape to out
lumber.
Berrien county was well represent
ed at the Georgia Chautauqua, Al
bany, this week.
“The talk of the town” Padnck
Bros., new stock and prices thut will
turn them into cash.
Tax Collector John R. MoOranio
is on his rounds assessing the taxable
resources of the county.
The county jail will soon be full
of birds again. Verily, “the way of
the transgressor is hard.”
Free wool could not make clothing
any cheaper than Padriok Bros., are
selling their new stock at.
The Gazette learns that the corpse
of a man was found near the tank
betweea Adel and Sparks a few days
since. It bad been partially buried
and attention was called to it by the
hogs rooting it up from its hiding
place. It is thought to be the body
of a man who was around Tifton some
days since mending tinware. From a
gash on the head, foul* play is sus
pected.
The entire stock of tobacco, cigars
and snuff of Jake W. Paulk is going
at cost. Good stock on hand and
now is the time for farmers to select
their supply.
Tiro Fruit Prospects.
The Gazette has quietly waited
for full developments us to the extent
of the damage done to the fruit orop
before expressing an opinion. The
editor desired to neither under-esti
mate the loss or to figure as a cal ma
ty howler! After a careful survey
of the situation he bus reached these
conclusions:
1. The freeze was exceedingly dis-
ustrions and the loss will full heavily
upon this section of the state.
2. The pear crop is almost a total
loss. There will be, perhaps, a few
inferior LeOonte pears. The same
thing may also be Baid of the Keiffer
pears.
3. Plum ttfces were much advanced
in blossom and the crop is a totoi loss.
4. Peaches have not fared so bad
ly, but fully one-half or two-thirds
of what promised two weeks ago to
be the finest peuch crop this section
has ever produced has vanished. Still
unless there shall be another freeze,
our people will bo afforded an oppor
tunity to smack their lips over some
very delicious pcaohcs. The older
Elberta trees had put ont thousands
of blossoms and if tho freeze had not
come the trees would Have been over-
ludcncd with fruit, us it is, only a few
of the later blossoms will develop
into fruit'and we are persuaded they
will be large and fine. The younger
Elberta trees had not blossomed to
any great extent, their fruit is safo
and will be of the flue$i quality.
