The Hii|)rernn court of South Caro-

The failures of the past week have
liooti somewhat more important than
usual, but were‘210 against 18(i for
the same period last year.—Dun’s

The death of Hon. Zchuton It.
Vance, senior United States senator
froin North Carolina, removes one of
the most prominent and brilliant
lights from American politics.
Dun’s Review says: “Out of liven-
ty.nine textile and metal working
concerns which stopped during the
past week, about a third closed be
cause of trouble about wages,”
It is now rumored that Judge .1.

hut it Is further rumored that his
declination is in the interest of ex
Judge James II. (blurry.
Tho democracy of two counties of

Judge James K, Hines,of Atlanta,

FOURTH YEAR.
The Gazette entered upon its
fourth year with the last issue. Three
years it has labored zealously for
what it conceived to lie the best inter
ests of Tifton and Jlerrien county;
it has tried to be a faithful and consci
entious reliex of the prosperity and
progress of both e.ity tied county as a
whole, and rejoices to know- that its
work has not been entirely in vain.
In every section of the county, the
past three years, there has been marked
improvement. New farms have been
opened up, old farm houses have been
repaired, rendered more comfortable,
and new ones have been built, and
the spirit of goaheadativencss is visi
ble everywhere.
Notwithstanding the past yeat has
witnessed a withering financial panic
—when factories, mills, mines mil
manufacturing enterprises of every
character in other portions of the
country were forced to shut down
and turn thousands of mechanics and
laborers out of employment, thereby
causing much dissatisfaction and dis
tress—the people of Tifton and Ber
rien county have not for a moment
been discouraged to the stage of de
moralization as In other sections.
They have kept, their eyes well to the
front.
Tho Gazette, though the patron
age it received was not what it
should have been, has made some
progress, its “cords have been
strengthened” by age, experience and
a larger acquaintance with the public.
The paper is steadily growing in
popularity and patronage, if not in
size.
Bill we started out to say that
many suhseriptions expired with the
issue of April llltli, and wo trust all of
them will renew promptly.
