The attention of the Gazette has
been called to some misstatement, of
facts which appeared in its columns
two or three weeks since in an article
tinder the caption of “The Reserve
Fund.” There ( was no intention of
reflecting upon the character or do
ing any one un injustice.
The article was based upon faulty
information. In the editor’s search
of tiie school law for the facts he
carelessly but unintentionally over
looked paragraph 21, which express
ly provides for the purchase by the
several County Boards of Education
of maps, charts, etc., and pay for them
out of any surplus school fund they
may have on hand.
We note further that Commission
er It rad well, in an interview publisli-
cdjin the Atlanta Constitution April
221, admits his use of the “reserve
fund” whs an unauthorized usurpa
tion of the rights of the several
Boards of Education. This being
true the Gazette accounts for the
use of it in the manner stated upon
the hypothesis of a loan and that the
money will be refunded next winter.
The article in the Valdosta Times
was based upon a conversation between
Commissioner Williams and Prof.
Smith—an attache of the paper,—
and is substantially correct, though
Commissioner Williams did not in
tend or expect wlnit. lie said to be
published.
The Gazette has the utmost con
fidence in the integrity of Commis
sioner Williams, as well as the mem
bers of the Boaisl of Education of
Berrien county and believe they are
performing their duties faithfully
and fearlessly, and with mi eye to liesl
interest of the whole people with ti
due regard for the law.

What ruins a towu and country is
Belling its product* to the mntiutuc-
tmers of the North at a small profit
and ofttirnes for lees than it coat to
raise it, und buying it back at large
profits. For instance, if we sell a
bale of cotton for $50, and it returns
to us twenty times doubled in value •
by the manipulation of another sec
tion's labor, we are the parties who
suffer.
If we sell a thousand feet of lum
ber for $10, and buy it back for $30
we have tost so much money, and as
a section becomes so roach the poorer.
The smite ru’a holds good to tho
minute details of retail trade. Every
dollar profit placed in the hands of a
merchant or workman of auutber

the revenues of our towu. It reduces
