hotly. There was some speaking, liut

amount indulged in by its predecess
ors. The Amount of work done is
not manifested in the number of laws
enacted, but rather in the number of
bills rejected. There were the usual'
number of local hills passed that are
of no general interest to the, public.
The bills uf a general nature that
went through and will very likely re
coive the approval of the governor
are few but some'of them are highly
important and make swamping
changes.
Col. Harrison, of Quitman, pass^l
his lull to appropriate money to pay
pensions to Confederate soldiers, who,
wero not wounded in the service, hut
who are unable to support them
selves by reason of old age, poverty
or disease. The first payment will
bo made next March.
Mr. Rockwell, of Savannah, had a
measure passed providing for the
chartering of navigation companies
by the secretary of state.
The bill of Mr. Wright, of Floyd,
was passed to allow judges to appoint
and remove court stenographers nt will

succeeded in passing several bills of
state importance. One of his meas
ures provides for tho attestation of
deeds to property in Georgia, when
executed out of the state, making it
sufficient if tho deed be duly attested
before a clerk of a circuit court or a
notary public and ex-officio justice of
tbe peace. Another provides anew
and more perfect method of condemn
ing private property for publio pur
poses. His bill to abolish auditors
and to require tho work to be done
by masters, regulating their fees, dues
and tho making of reports is one that
interests all tbe lawyers iu the state.
Another bill of Mr. Cniriming’s
ebaiiges the entire present law of
making assignments, and allows deb
tors to prefer creditors in certain iu
stances.
Mr. Worley, ot Elbert, passed an
important measure. It is to allow
; udgos in vacation to appoint com
missioners to lay oft' dower interests.

Senator Lumpkin Bnccoeded in
passing a law that interests all the
merchants of the state. Heretofore
a creditor could, get up three claims
of any amount against a merchant
ami put his estate in the bauds of a
receiver. In many instances, under
the present law, tile receivership, the
court costs nnd the lawyers’ fees eon
sumo tho estate and the creditors get
nothing. His bill requires that lie
fore a mot chant can be placed in tile
hands of a receiver the petitioner
must represent two-thirds of the
amount the debtor owes, add it must
allege that the claims aie due and -the
debtor insolvent.
'Senator Mercer’s geological bill
passed both houses. It provides for
a thorough reorganization of tho geo
logical department ami a survey of
the pondsand lakes of the state with
a view to having them drained nnd
tho laud, reclaimed. The hill met
with little or no opposition.

Senator Lewis’ bill authorizing the
governor to sell the Northeastern
railroad was an important ono. The
governor will decide when the road
is to ho sold and will give notice of
the sale in the newspapers.
Senator Cumming’s hill to allow
state banks to issue bank notes under
such regulations as congress shall de
cide upon was passed. This law was
enacted in viqw of the proposed leg
islation by congress, and in ordur
that ffenrgia might be in a position
to take advantage of tbe national law
ns soon as it is passed, Otherwise
Georgia state banks would have
wait until tho legislature meets next
fall. This bill will enable Georgia to
get relief from tho -ten ( pcr cent tax

her sutler states.

company can do business in Georgia
without making a deposit witli the
state treasury, ns is now .required by
law. Tho business can be done
through brokers. Mr. Broyles had
an ainendilient put on the bill which
may protect unsuspecting people.
