New YonK, January 18,—In faee
of thn continued dullness of specula
tion, the strength of tho gotten mar
ket is remarkable, as thorn is no sign
of any cessation in the movement of
above the parity of those current I
here. Tho basis for the investment
buying would seem to be tho proba
bilities of u doorcase in the acreage
next soiison, and a reduction in the
yield, as a result of the disorganiza
tion of labor, which must follow from
(lie removal of the intelligent super
vision upon large plantations. Our
advices from many sections of the
South, where tho arrangements for
the now crop are lioiug made, are to
the effect that those who have here
tofore employed labor for tho pur
pose of raising tho crop nre adopting
two different methods of procedure.
One portion of the largo planters ap
pear to bo simply reducing the acre
age, while another portion is turning
its laud over to its employes mid ar
ranging with them for the payment
of a rental in the shape of cotton to
bo grown next season. Both of these
multinds will of conrso reduce tho
yield, as those who rout the hind will
not have the same supervision ns in
previous years, and the crop will be
badly uiiltlvulQil and poorly fertilized.
In ilic meantime the market remains
on u very slow basis, with fluctua
tions representing only the tempora
ry needs of local traders. Those
who look for a further decline be
hove that the stagnation in spoeula-
tinn will eventually bring about the
liipiidnlion of these investment hold
ings on the theory that it is simply a
question of time when disgust will
take possession of holders at the fail
are of thn market to improve. This
course might be oxpectod to follow
hud the interest been accumulated on
nn advancing market, but the cotton
which has been bought and is now
held lias been purchased with a full
knowledge of the magnitude of this
crop, nna in tills respect recalls the
long Interest which was mado in Au
gust, 1892, and which refused to
liquidate until the short crop enabled
them to do so at a profit. It requires
no perspicacity to discover reasons
why cotton should decline from 5Jc
tier pound. It calls for an insight
into tho future to liml substantial rea
sons for nn,advance other than that
cotton is now selling below what is
usually believed to bo the cost of pro
duction, and that Consumption is
larger timn ever known in the histo
ry of cotton.

the crop, and the support, of which in

those who are ®apt to appear in sea
