Ckcil, March 4.—Tltcre arc some
specimen* of the genus homo who arc
true puzzles to tho professorhood ot
the civilized world; ill other words,
there are some combines of mind and
matter that are stranger than the
dream of an alchemist.
The mind, for instance, is not al
ways measured by the metre of the
body. H. V. Johnson and Robert
Toombs were both physical and men
tal giants, but A. II. Stephens was
a dwarf, almost, in body, but a full
grown giant in mind. But Little
Alec’s body was symmetrical,although
a “light weight.”
There are warped minds in perfect
bodies, but very seldom do you see a
porfcct mind in a warped body. Of
course it would not do to name spec
imens, as in the other case, but the
man who has idle tune to read this,
can find one in the circle of his ac
quaintance.
The jockeys say that a horse witli
one white foot has one bad fault, and
they keep pace until all four feet are
white when, they say, lie will kill his
ider bofore he dies. I cannot say
as to the above, but ft man with a
marked peculiarity of body, usually
has one in mind.
* » * *
A certain Professor, a friend of
mine, had never learned the above
facts, and therefore, as the boys say,
he put his foot in the toils. My
friend, in seeking a job, gave as a
reference a man whom lie relied on.
But his friend had one white foot and
he gently kicked—his menial consti
tution forbade his being a friend.
Flattery is a coin like the silver
dollars are to some of our gold-bugs,
th >y all kick against it, but wo are all
ea.'cr for it. 1 love silver, for it is
thi poor man's money; and I Jove
flattery, for it is a stimulant to the
mind.

Emiima, March 0.—Elder W. K.
Cox tilled his regular appointment
here last Saturday and Sunday. Dur
ing the meeting, Mrs. Peter Harper
joined the church, and was baptized
Sunday afternoon.
Elder Henry Parrish preached at
tho Gibbs school house, one and one-
half miles north of Brookfield, on
Saturday and Sunday last, lie is a
Primitive Baptist, and will preach,
(D. V.), at the same place on the first
Sunday in May and Saturday before.
Miss Mattio Rhodes, of Brookfield,
is visiting friends here this week.
She says she thinks a certain little
boy here is very pretty, and further
says—well, I won’t say.
Hon. T. K. Williams was in town
last week. I am sorry to say that
there has grown up considerable dis
cord in school matters at this place
Prof. Williamn tried to harmonize the
conflicting elements, but failed to do
so. As the matter stands, I see no
chance to prevent a permanent divis
ion, and the establishment of two
schools in the place. This is, indeed,
a slate-of affairs to be deeply regret-
ed, and should lie remedied, if pos
sible. “A house divided against it
self must fait.”
Mrs. Thos. A. Ball is quite sick at
present with catarrhal fever. I hofie
she will soon lie well again.
Mr. R. W. Smith, who has been
very sick for the past few weeks, .is
r4.il! seriously ill. He is about seven
ty-five yents old, iuitj ban been fading
in health for the past two or three
years. Iris feared that lie will dot
recover from the present attack.
Mrs. Murray’s little two-year-old
girl has been suffering Very severely
from an attack of pneumonia during
the past teu days. She is now much
better, and I hope will soon lie well.
My young friend, Henry Hays, lias
been very sick for two or three days,
but is inueb better this morning.
Mr. nnd Mrs. C. 1. Jones, of Aln-
paha, visited hero one day last week.
Miss Nannie Lott Pool visited
friends at Alapaha Inst week, return
ing home Sunday.
Capt. J. B. Gunn made a business
trip to Brunswick one day last week.

Ava, March 4.—We reported in
our communication a few weeks back
that log-rollings were a thing of tho
past, but had the pleasure of attend
ing one more to-day, (Monday).
Where will the next one be?
Mr. Myer Whitehurst will be busy
for the next three weeks hauling coin-
post from his lots. If Hcirien had
more such farmers as him, ere long
her linancial outlook would brighten.
Mr. R. M. Wrightjono of tho River
Bend’s most industrious young men,
who has been away for tho past two
years teaching, is now at homo on
his farm. Wo wish him success in
all liis undertakings.
Mr. and Mrs. Jake McKaddcn in
vited the Sunday school at Sineath
school house, to sing for them last
night (Sunday). With Mr. K. K
Crosby as leader, and Miss Emma
Smith as organist, they made nice
music.
The roads of our community are
in a very had condition—almost im
possible tu get lo town, Imt with a
little work could be made much bet
ter, and we think it should be attend
ed to. Who’ll be the first to start?
Prof. lit arcus Patten has an aver

good teacher, and always wields the

Kviiima, March G.-Judge J. A.
Ball made a flying trip to Nashville
yesterday.
Mr. J, R. Peters and wife are vis
iling relatives and friends at their old
home, near Naylor, this week,
Mr. and Mrs. H.F.Stewart’shearts
are made happy again by a new ar
rival at their house—she is a Itoy.
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hughs are also
happy—he is a girl.
Mrs. J. M. B. Smith has been se
riously ill tile past week, but it gives
us pleasure to say she. is now qii the
road to recovery.
Mr. E. ;1L Smith happened to a
very painful accident yesterday,while
handling lumber at the mill. The
carelessness of a negro boy caused a
piece of lumber to fall oil his hand,
mashing and lacerating it to such an
extent is to require the services of x
physician.
Two negroes had a roundabout at
the mill yesterday. Result: One had
to consult Dr. Ball with a broken
head, while the other has emigrated
to parts unknown.
Dr. E. V. Ball has just completed
a neat, office oil the corner of North
Broad and Railroad streets, which is
an ornament to our town. Dr. Ball
is a very promising nnd clover young
physician, and the greater part of our
community would very reluctantly
part with liis invaluable services.
Mrs. Stevens, our efficient milliner,
is expecting the arrival of her hus
band home from Charleston, S. C.,
where ho lias been at work for some
time past.
Our school is progressing nicely
under tho auspices of Prof. Giay,
with .’if) pupils.
Messrs. Weston & Gunn’s mill is
now making full time under the man
agement of those efficient business
men, and it is a pleasant sight to see,
after being hindered so much by the
inclement weather. Maun ns.
“Perhaps you .would hot think so, but
a very large proportion of diseases in
New Vorkcomos from carelessness about
patching cold," says Dr. Syrils Kdson.
“It is such a simple thing anil so common
that very few people, unless it Is a case
of pneumonia, pay any attention to a
coin. New York is one of the healthiest
places nn the Atlantic Coast and yet there
are a great many cases of catarrh and
consumption which have their origin In
this neglect of the simplest precaution of
every aay life. The most sensible advice
is. when you have one get rid of !t as
soon as possible. By all means do not
neglect it.” Dr. Edson does not tell you
how to cure a cold but we will. Take
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy It will
