It. K. Turner, Ksq., of Nashville,
made u visit, to Tifton two or three
weeks ago and the following, from
his pen, gives the reader an idea of
the impression made upon hitn by
what he saw and heard:
VJtjr visit to Tifton convinced me that
the little city at the crossing is t'apitlly
building up. I could scarcely realize it.
was the same Tifton J saw eighteen
months before.
"Many new buildings have been erect

dences of Messrs. E. II. and W. 0. Tift
which, when completed, will compare
favorably with those of our larger North

of the latter's residence is the finest 1

On Spiurdaty morning, February Oth, st
his home, near Stage Pond, A. 6'. Sumner,
in the (17th year of his age.
“Uncle Alex," as he was familiarly
called, came to this country about nine
teen years ago and settled in what was
then known Its Hernando county, where
he resided up to llie time of his death. A
good, Industrious farmer—an honest, up
right citizen—he wop the confidence and
friendship of all that knew him. It makes
us sad to think that “Uncle Alex" will lie
with us no more, and while wo sincerely
mourn ids loss we should remember that
it is but his eternal gain. The last few
years of his life were years of pain and
suffering, which lie bore with pationce,
courage and fortitude, ami when the
Messenger of Death fame to call him to
his lust home, lie found him ready und

who lmd them built.
“The fair building is a largo ami roomy
one, but the enterprising people of Tift-

paring for the .grandest and most attract

“I saw the ruins of the Baptist church,
destroyed by tire last year. It was an
elegant building and its destruction a 1
great loss to Tifton Baptists and the de
nomination in this state. Uudaunted,
however, the members lmvcgone to work
to replace it with a larger and a better
building. Thu work has commenced and
will be completed in the near future.
“I noticed also that the people of Tift
on are not neglecting her educational in
terests. They have a building, large and
comfortable, with an interesting school
taught by Prof. E. J. Williams, Jr., one
of Berrien county’s progressive young
men. The names of ninety pupils appear
upon the rolls ami the number is steadily
increasing. I am pleased to note the fact
that Prof. VV. is giving his patrons entire
satisfaction as an instructor.
‘ Tifton is regularly laid off, her wide
streets and wide sidewalks arc becoming
to her—or any other progressive city-

kept is evidence that she 1ms an excellent
and progressive municipal government,
