The Georgia Southern and Florida
railroad has passed the second period
named in the doeree of sale without
changing hands. Thu general im

April when there will be no upset

the purchaser. The latest rumor is
that it. will ho bid off by a syndicate
of workingmen.

The Gakktth knows no section in
its efforts to advance the moral, relig
ious, educational and material inter
ests of Berrien county. The sugges
tion made by certain persons that it
is the policy of the paper to build up
Tifton and eontlgumii country at the
expense of other sections of the coun

unworthy emanation fiom any true
Ilian. Them should ho no jealousy
between the several sections ol tin-
county; the prosperity of olio meaiiH
the upbuilding of the others, and all
should labor together for the gonwral
good. This is certainly the policy of
Tifton and her institutions.

The Gaf.IITI'K Inis been searching
mound, since (lie late Berrien county
grand jury reeommonded the election
of the county’s School Commissioner,
Bonrd^if Udiieation and (.'ommissioii-
ers of Hoads and Iti venues by the
people at the general election, in vain
to find the good that will bn accom
plished thereby. The mutter has
been viewed from every standpoint
mid in thu light of experience, and
without impugning the motives of the
Jury or inise.iiloiilatliig the capability
of the people to choose their nubile
servants, candidly confess we do not
believe the present ollleors can be ini
proved upon either in the matter of
ability or cheap service. There is no
county in Georgia that lias more opin
potent, pilloient or conscientious olli-
rials in tliusu positions than Berrien ;
then why seek to change them for
now ones ? They are serving the
people from patriotic impulses ilic
pay is certainly inadequate to the ser
vice rendered—and not one of them
would go before the people in a
surainblu for olection. No citizen
desires an olllco where the pay is so
small and the abuse received so great.

sioners be made elective, sucli men us
