Kelioea from Derrion Siiimrior
Court,.
Very little civil bnsiness was tried,
the most important Wing continued
until the next term from various
causes. Tlie jurisdiction of tlie county
court having been increased to $. r >UU
in civil cases, only .a few of tlie most
important will claim the attention of
the superior court in' tlm future and
lesnlt in great saving to tlie county.
In order to avert any unfavorable
criticism of the disposition made of
the case of Heorge Hold am, charged
with the murder of Woodsman Hore,
near Staunton, and who 'was sen
tenced to ten years in the penitenti
ary upon his pleading guilty of man
slaughter, it is due Judge Hansel! and
Solicitor-General Peeples that the
Gazette should state that there were
extenuating circumstances connected
with the case that jqstified them in
accepting the plea of manslaughter
and shortening the term of service.
5Ir. W- R- Fntch, who has recently
embanked in the livery stable business
at Nashville, did a rushing business
during court week. Being county
treasurer lie was the most popular
man in the town during the closing
scenes of the court; the clerk, sheriff,
bailiffs and jurors all wanted to see
him.
The Gazette man enjoyed the
hospitality of Hon. Ii. K. Turner and
Rev. E.» VV. Overstreet during his
stay and they made it very pleas rut
for him. It is told on the former that
he has a notion of—trotting in double
harness again. The latter lias a most
estimable wife arid an interesting fam
ily of children, all of whom- honor
their parents.
The Ga/.etti: has many warm
friends at Nashville who gladly wel
come its proprietor tvheneyer lie
visits tlie place. They all renewed
their subscription and gave him a
nice batch of job printing besides.
They give no credence to tlie story
that lie is paying taxes oil property
that hoesn’t belong to him.
Tlie Sunday-school workers .of
Nashville are looking forward to the
county convention to be held there
on tlie third Sunday gpd Saturday
before in April with anticipations of
plensrre. They have selected Col. J.
II. Gary to deliver the address of
weljome and, as presidentvM)f the;
county association, the editor of tlie
Gazette lifts selected Supt. J. J.
Knight, of Mil I town, 1 to respond.
Tlie programme of the convention
will be published next week.
Strange Occurrence.
In the early spring of 1894 Mr. B.
O. l’urrish, wiio tires m the Lots
district, employed a jDirtlg muj-r-
whose name it js nnnejptsary famen-- 1
Don in this cbmieotiom— to work oti
his farm. On Saturday afternoon,
before the first- Sunday- in April Mr.
Parrish took the young man to bis>
room, opened u trunk and paid hint'
Ins past month’s wages. In the trunk
was two ff> hills and a tux receipt.
The following Monday morning the-
young man reported himftelf sick and.
didn’t work. In a duy or two the-
ubsence of the money and receipt
from the trunk was discovered. The
next Saturday the young man was-
discharged. The matter was about
forgotten; but on Thursday morning
of last week, after the severe wind
storm of the day and night before,
the identical money and receipt wer?
found lying in the middle of the sit
ting loom floor, supposed to liuve
been blown there by the' wind from
a crevioe at the top of the wall. The
question is, how did the money and
receipt get from the trunk to the
ereviie? The readers can form their
own conclusions.
