And through storm or sunshine,

across gently rippling, moonlight
seas, or tossing hither and yon on
foaming storm-waves rolling moun

a tower of strength in adversity; a

ONLY A WOMAN'S EDITION,
Some of our editorial friends,
wlio claim to vast superiority simp
ly because a fickle fashion decides
they shall wear two small skirls
instead one large one, have sail
something about Woman's Editions
becoming too common.
Truly, they arc common ; many
of them very common indeed, and
the world became familiarized with
them several thousand years ago,
although it lias not yet quite read
the edition through, and is con
stantly running across hidden grins
of paragraphs or patent medicine
cuts of contrariness that had been
undreamed of.
We remember very forcibly thut
a “woman’s edition" sang sweet
luliuhys to us in our infant days, or
cuddled tin down to rest and sleep
in Its capacious arms; that shared
our joys and sympathized in our
sorrows, and (tell it not in (lath)
spanked us in our wayward mo

A CORKER STONE.
In our own glorious nineteenth
century, the laying of tin: corner
stone of some of the massive struc
tures, that reach from the blue skies
of heaven above to the depths of
the earth beneath, are attended
witli impressive and touching cere
monies.
But we never read or hear of the
laying of one hut what our mind
wanders hack ward across the thous
ands of intervening years, and be
fore the eye of imagination we
behold the scene of the laying of
the first and greatest, corner-stone,
on Calvary’s rocky summit, where
our blessed Savior paid the price cil
our redemption and placed the
Rock of Ages hi: a refuge from sin.
We also see the devoted hand of
Israel’s children as they emerge
from the trackless desert, and after
forty years of wandering at last
reach the hank of Jordan’s Rowing
waters, that border the l'romtsed
Laud, the land of tludr deliverance,
for which they left Egypt with its
sin and voluptuousness; encoun
tered the perils and hardships of
the desert, and at last came to the
land which find had promised to
(heir fathers in the years long
gone.
And as tin: surging waters are
divided by God's mysterious and
powerful hand, and across the
pearly sands (hi: multitude slowly
pass from the land of toil nnd dan
ger, strife and famine into the
laud of plenty ; as each tribe cross-
ess between the walls of water, a
high priest lakes from the bed ol
the river a stone, and near the
brink they are placed, a monument
to celebrate Israel's deliverance.
lie children of Israel are scattered
to the lour winds of heaven; the
beautiful, plenteous vineyards and
orchards nnd fertile valleys are
now trackless wastes, or barren,
rock-strew n, sun-scorched hillsides ;
and the howling mob that mocked
(lie Man of Fence to Cnlvury’s sum
mit have crumbled in the dust of
ages past. But the pile of stones
taken from Jordan's bed remain to
this day 11 monument to God's love
ami mercy and a nation's deliver
ance, typical of tlie laying of th
great corner stone of the true re
ligion, laid by Jesus’ sacrifice on
Calvary which is now a noble
and towering structure, indeed a
fitting monument to His great and
glorious name.
As with tiie Israelites, so with
us. By his wonderful mercy, God
lias brought us up from the land of
lust and mammon ; has opened our
eyes to our true lift: and shown us
tile beauties of the life beyond ; lias
parted the waters of the Lethean
•on and guided our wattdering
footsteps through; when wo hun
gered the manna of heaven has
fallen to give us angel's food; when
we thirsted, the living rock has
opened to give ns drink; from, the
wandering tribes of the desert he
has delivered us, and despite our
wanderings and'’faithlessness and
idolatry, has protected his chosen
people from the enemies of. lltcir
soul. The hot sun of adversity
has been clouded by the , depth of
His mercy; the black night of sor
row lias been lighted by the pillar
of fife of Jlis blessed promise, and
when our journey is completed and
at last He parts the waters of the
Jordan of death, (hat our passage
may be easy into the land that
flows with milk from the fountain
of love and with honey from the
realms of bliss, is it not fitting that
we should at least leave one stone
by the river’s brink to tell the ages
yet unborn of the saving power of
Immanuel’s love, and of a soul’s
deliverance through this glorious
sacrifice?
Let us, then, since Godlias done
so much for 11s, at least perpetuate
tiie record of 11 is mercy. Every
good act or kind word is a stone;
every perfect, complete life a mon
ument to Him. Let us react and
live that when we are gone there
will stand on the bank of the River
of time a monument, to be seen and
read by the ages to come.
Let our lives commemorate the,
laying of the one great Corner-
Stone.
