From tin) SpiinirlleM (O) gepulillc.f
Tii-tok, Ga., April 6. 1895,-When I
was in this country for the first lime,
four weeks ago, l hero wus hilt Utile show
ing of grass on the ground or leaves on
the fruit trees. Now the pine woods aro
green with the new growth of wire grass
and flowers of brilliant hue are in bloom
on every side. The peach bloom has fal
len and the young peaches are beginning
to make a showing that promises an im
mense crop. Before me on the table as 1
write lie .three twigs that I cut from peach
trees this afternoon, on which respect
ively are 8, 9 and 12 young peaches. An
other has six peaches on a space of two
inches. Tlnse twigs were selected al
most at random and the peaches arc as
large as cherries. Unless sorno of them
fall ott soon, the growers will be com
pelled to pick off from one-half to two-
thirds of the fruit, or the trees will ho
broken down. In Sir. W. O. Tift's main
orchard in which are 8,000 trees in full
bearing which will yield, at a vory low
estimate, 12,000 bushels. This crop will
bring at a low estimate, $15,000, above all
expenses of picking, crating, freight char
ges and commissions, Other orchards are
quite as promising.
Our parly arrived hero at 3 o’clock and
lmd no soonergot our dinner than Mr.
Kent and Mr. Tift came around, ptoparod
to give us a drive. Wo went through
Air. Tift's orchards and I saw laud which
covered with stumps when l was
here four weeks ago, ns perfectly tree
from them as it would have been if. there
bail nover been any trees on it. This land
is now planted to peach trees and prep
arations are being made to grow a crop of
cotton or some other crop on it.
In a former letter l spoke of Sir. liar
Iloldano'a experiment in growing lrisl
potatoes between his poach trees. To
day 1 was along llie peach orchard and
saw tho potatoes standing green and
thrifty four Inches high. Where the land
was being plowed when I was here before
corn is growing four inchos high aad a
piece of what was woodland then, is now
ready for a crop. Tho contract price for
clearing such land free of everythin;;
that will interfere with tho plow, is $8.50
per acre. Hundreds of thousands of dol
lara will be realized from the peach crop
in the fruit hell of Georgia this year for
.danger of frost Is over. The whole fruit
growing part of the State is booming
anil the $5-nn-ac.re land that 1 told about
in my former letter is being marked up in
price. I predict that If the crops
f this year fulfils tho promise of
tho present that the price of land will
double at once. The fruit holt Is not
large and that part of it that is easily nc
ceaaible to the railroad is still more tlnil
ted and Hie holders of tho land do not
feel that they are liable to lack for pur
chasers even at a higher price. It is
simply astonishing how quickly a forest
disappears and cleared Holds takes Its
place. Kvery week scc3 noticeable
changes in the appearance of Iho couu-
try.
I consider it vallicr a high compliment
to the correctness of my former letters
concerning this eo-i-vry- that iho Tifton
Gazettk lias reprinted them in full and
tho cordial well'-" '' with which 1 was met
Is characteristic ,,- jple.
To morrow we shall drive to Eldorado.
Tills is six miles south of Tifton, and od
ors tho best Inducements to now com
ment that can bo found in this section.
The land Is ns good as any. The stand
ing trees aro few and land can be bought
that abuts on Iho town site. Tho move
ment 1b In that direction and a large com
pany Is beginning operation within, a
short distance. Tiioro Is a prospect that
a large number of Btnck companies will
begiit operations In this section In the
near future. This form of investment Is
tho most promising one that I know of at
this time. Tho companies now in opera
tion can hardly fail to dcchtro dividends
that will ho astonishing. The superin
tendent of one of these companies said in
my hearing to-dny, that lie expected tho
crop of peaches this year to nay the
whole expenso of bringing It Into bearing.
Even the natives arc getting enthusiastic
over the wonderful resources of tho
country, and actually seem to he waking
up to the fact that wealth is possible with
a moderate display of energy.
