Gov. Xoi tlien’s colony to he local-

■to grow—newspaper growth. It lias
coached the stupendous number of
40,000.
lion. W. Y. Atkinson is making a
hotter governor than wan .over hoped
for by Ills most ardent supporters,
Chronic soreheads are trying to lie-
come reconcile^, although it is very
hard on them.
It must appear to the Hon. S.
(iuyte McLendon, of Thomasville,
'that the.uukindest thrust made upon
him by the Atlanta Journal, is the
suggestion that he is a congressional
possibility, or even probability, in the
second district.
A great deal has been said of late
about the brains of t|ie nation being
located north of the Mason and Dixon
lino, lull it is refreshing to note that
a northern journal in publishing a
list of one btjiulrod and fifteen of the
brainiest men in the United Stales
located nn overwhelming majority of
them in the South. A great majority
of the presidents,ofitlie United States
have been of southern birth.
The Macon papors are whooping
up it peach carnival for that, city tills
summer. Tifton is going to have a
fruit carnival .Inly lOlh, lltli and
12th, where will lie exhibited not only
the finest.peaches grown in Georgia,
but various other fruits worth seeing.
The (1 AZKT.TIC invites its esteemed
con temporaries to come up to the
midsummer lair and see what the
Empire Harden is doing for the pros
perity,of their slate.
The flimneiai Tight is on, and the
outlook is that it will be to the finish.
Jlolli sidua—the single and double
standards of value—are marshaling
their forces for the grand onslaught
next, year. In this light the Gazette
is enlisted on the side of the masses
in favor.of the use of both gold and
silver oa money of filial payment; in
favor of a sound currency, believing
that.both metals can he maintained
on a parity with each dther by safe
guards of legislation if a congress rim
be Clouted with HllfiloioMt courage to
render this uoedod service Vo the
people. Yes, we are in favor of the
restoration of silver by the side of
gold as a money mclitl.
In'n.lengthy arlioloon the develop*

Timcs-Advcrtisor lias the following
kind words to say of the Tifton see-
turn: “Up tlm Hruimwiok mid IVest-
ern, spreading out from the radius of
the Georgia oouthorti and Kleridii,
ui.miigeil with the modem enthusiasm
ef common sense in placing the se-
duoMvo possibilities of its wayside to
the front by experimental planting,
the evidence of improvement find do
velopment is more marked. Thom*
nnds ot nor us are answering to the
t.uio'i of energetio husbandmen, and
.elegant homes are being fashioned
which give the passenger a glimpse
of what might be by reason of energy
mid industry.”
Judge Hrlggs, last Monday, con
firmed tlm sale of the Georgia South
ern and Florida railroad at the price
of »l),(JOd,0OO. The money has boon
paid, and the property duly transfer
red to ilia new owners. Speaking of
the futuio of the road Mr. Wilmcr,
the attorney for the purchasers who
bid it) the property, says re-organir.a-
lion will take place at the earliest
practical moment and operated as an
entirely independent railroad accord
ing to the enterprising policy of the
.old mnuagemunt, lie says, and il is
glad tidings to the people, “the coun

Tlm onostipfl is, are they equal to the
task ? Hut the ridiculous part of the
situation is, the democratic party is
expected to pay this debt and rectify;
the effects of thirty years ot -evil leg-,
Islatinn in one short term of four
years. The folly «f this expectation
is too apparent,!
Prof. Henry G. Hubbard, the en
tomologist of the National Depart
ment of Agriculture who resides at
Crescent City, Florida, writes to the
.Scientific American that “the cold
weather which desolated the gardens
and orange groves of that state killed
unnumbered millions of injurious in
sects. All .cockroaches in sight, mid
even those in houses, unless they we're
exceptionally well protected, were
killed. The young scale insects which
had not passed their second moult
were killed, although many eggs sur
vive, and some ndultH ot both sexes.
The nitidulid beetles in decaying
fruit wore also killed, small gnats in
flowers were frozen, aitd not a living
colony of plant lice is to be seen on
any orange or other tree. No living
specimen of the destructive white fly,
Aleyrodes citri, was found, and as the
eggs were laid on the leaves, every
ono of which will drop before the
now growth appears the cold wave
would Imvu almost exterminated this
pest lint for the fact that, besides the
orange' tree, it also infests the cape
jessamine, ancl as the leaves of these
plants have not all fallen, Prof, Hub
bard is advising ilic orange growers
to cut down their jessamines and burn
them. Since the breeding of inju
rious insects bus been suspended now
for some weeks an excellent opportu
nity lias been offered to clear the
trees of scale with comparatively mild
insecticides, On the oilier band, the
trees have been so enfoebled by the
cold that they will bo an easier prey
to injurious insects than they wore
before.” The Gazette is personally
