Chattanooga lias been granted the
privilege of enteimining tho Soutll-
orn Baptist Convention at itH next
session, in 1890.
Tho 'Vaycross IIoraM doesn’t
seem to know that the Japo-Chinoso
war has ended. It continues to pub
lish illustrations of that sanguinary
struggle.
. Tho Wnycross Herald promptly
volunteers to furnish its Macon name
sake with an accompaniment to its
“Pencil” edition—“Honey.” Well,
“Peach and Honey" hear the reputa
tion of being excellent companions—
in liquid form.
The Uakkttk makes this liberal
offer to its readers: To the ono
sending the largest number of rash
subscriptions to tho G.izkttk office
by Sept. 1st, 1895, we will furnish
transportation and a week’s enter
tainment at tho Cotton States Expo
sition, to bo held in Atlanta, free.
For tho second largest number of
easli subscriptions, wo will furnish a
round trip ticket to tho Exposition,
free. On all subscriptions from our
agents, we will pay a commission of
10 per cent. Subscription price *1
per year, 50 oonts for six months, 25
cents for throe months. This eon-
test, is to begin nt once.
Mr. Turner, tho principal keeper
of tho Georgia penitentiary, furnishes
an excellent contribution to the argu
ment in favor of prohibition, To
show what effect it has upon tho
morals of a county or set of coun
ties ho selected four prohibition
counties—Putnam, Jasper, Jones and
Wilkinson—and four whisky coun
ties— Baldwin, Qroeno, Hancock and
Morgan. He found, going back ten
years, that statistics show tho four
dry counties sent eighty-six convicts
to the penitentiary during llmt period,
while tho wot counties sent one hun
dred and twenty-eight, The eom-
p arisen ncods no comment,.
Tho Gazbttjs apologises to its
readers for the small space in its col
umns devoted to reading matter. We
beg their indulgence fora few weeks;
arrangements inn being perfected for
an enlargement of tho paper to nearly
double its present slzo, us well as
otlior malernd improvements in both
tho newspaper ami Job printing es
tablishments. With tho onlurgemenl,
of tile pnpoiyicw foutureswill be muled
to its nows columns that' will prove a
source of pleasure and profit to the
reader. Tho Gazktth will lie made
tlio eipial of any paper in Georgia,
not only In typograpnlohtmuty Iml in
tlie nmke-np Of its editorial and news
columns.
We intend udvoealing the growing
of Jersey sweet potatoes in Smith
Georgia. Thev can ho put into the
Northern markets by July, and at
this date would be immensely profit
able, as it would he a month to six
■weeks in advance of tho Jersey crop.
Wlml we cannot understand is why
our pcoplo have not seized this op
portunity years ago, Tho (South
Georgia grown Jersey sweet lias been
pronounced superior to the Northern
grown potato by tho oominisslou men
themselves, and Ims brought more
money per barrel, sold in competition
with Northon stock. One of the
iiiniii advantages in growing (lie Jer
sey sweet is the ease with which it is
grown, the soil and ollinuto huciii to
bo its native element. Farmers, grow
more Jersey sweets for Northern
shipment I They will bring the
hoodie.
