The month of May this year has
broken all records for extremo cold
in New York since tho establishment
of tho records at the weather bureau.
On Monday tho thermometer regis
tered 38. The cold snap was gener,
al throughout the country, hut the
South did not suffer as much as the
other sections.
Some one has well said: “In the

The new state bonds sold by Gov.
Atkinson on May 1st, to the Colum
bus Savings Bank, to redeem tho
Northeastern railroad bonds bear the
portrait of Mrs. Atkinson on their
face instead of that of the Govornor.
This is an innovation, as it has been
the custom in the past to place the
likeness of the Governor on bonds
issued during their several adminis
trations.

Only a newspaper realizes to the
fullest extent how impossible it is to
satisfy all the moods and tenses of
all people. One wants this and one
wants that and if they want the same
thing they want it in different ways.
One thinks you a little too early,
while one frets that you ore too late
entirely. In fact, if you want a real
crazy quilt, just let the slow and the
fast, the early bird and the lato
worm, the nervous and the cranks all
turn loose at once in a newspaper.—

Sparks, C. L. Bartlett, A. L. Miller
and Emmet Barnos returned from
Baltimore, Washington and New
York to-day, where they have been
on business connected with tho Geor
gia Southern railway officials. They
are not very communicative as to
wlmt was done there. There seems
to he no doubt that when Mr. W. B.
Sparks is dismissed as receiver, ho
will he put in chargo of the property
under the new reorganization. What
his title will lie is not known. It will,
no doubt, be either vice-president or
general manager, most likely the for
mer. He wilt retain all the officers,
from Genoral Manager Lane down,
it is not known who will be presi
dent. Neither is it known how long
before Receiver Sparks will bo dis
missed. Tho receivership may con
tinue only three weeks and it may
continue throe months.
This will be welcome nows to the
people of all this section, as it is well
understood that Mr. Sparks favors

“Speaking of tho late cold snap,”
said Judge IIan sol I, who was in ono
of his interesting reminiscent moods,
“I remember very distinctly tho cold
weather in April, 1849. Court was
in session at Hawkinsville. Tho first
frost occurred on the 19th, and there
was a heavy, killing frost for five con
secutive mornings. Corn and cotton
was killed and tho farmers thought a
famine faced them. The hickory treos
and other growth which hart budded
and loafed out looked like they had
been swept by a fire. Thu farmers
replanted and never m tho history of
tho county were better crops of corn
atul cotton made.” — Thomasvillo
