There 1ms been much saitl about peach
es ami peaches for the pa.-q tiv months in
ami about the lianrlat-mo little city of Tif-
ton, until perhaps wo may lay claim In
tiding a breezy city in more ways than
one. Well, wo arc entllleil to be breezy,
if wo can only substantiate it ami litis is
what we propose to do. .V visit to out
numerous orchards will demonstrate this
very clearly.
These is'the Tift Urn's, interests, for
example, with upwards of 75,000 trees
bowing lo earth with their luscious, tin-h
illy fruit, many of which are ready for tlie
picker's deft lingers at this writing. Mr.
Tift announced to OB thla(Monday) morn
ing, tiiat thev would ship a car load by
June 6lh anil this, beyond question, will
be tlie lirst solid car to leave Georgia for
the grfeat eastern markets. The returns
will no doubt be watched with intetesl.
We have hoard much about oilier sections
nortli of us marketing the lirst crate of
pearlies, but it remains after nil for Tiflon
to come to tlio front with the litst sub
stantial returns.
We have been for the past few days
plucking a few mellow beauties from our
orchards hut there was not sufficient pre
vious to this writing to justify shipment,
and we prefer to go Into the market with
fruit that is perfectly developed and in
good edible condition, rather than ship
a lot of green, Imperfect fruit that will
not only lie tasteless ant! unpalatable but
would hurt the reputation of the shipper
and all for the purpose of having it said
we shipped the lirst peaches.
It was our pleasure a day or so ago to
pay a visit to lho famous Cyclom-ta farm,
a few utiles mm It of Tiftou, on t he Geor
gia Southern and Florida railway, and
opetated by said road as an experimental
station. C’npt. I). G. Irby, the genial su
perintendent, took us in charge and
would not lei us go until ho had shown
us some of the wonders be lias been work
ing out, and we must acknowledge that
before lie had gone far lie had fully con
vinced us that 'there Were some things we
had to learn about horticulture and gen
eral farming, and about which wo will
have much lo say In future numbers of
the (Iazktth. The Captain inhumed us
lie had 40,000 pencil trees, a large propor
tion of which will have a partial cron
while quite a large number will he in
full bearing tills season. The Early Al
exander orchard'is a sight to behold. Wc
counted as many as fifty pouches on a
small limit, and some were broken with
lie loads all blushing with the glow of a
fair maiden's check.
It was our privilege lo help pick the
lirst crate of litis earliest of all the peach
es. Next we drove through tlie Elborta
orchard. These begin to ripen shortly
after July 1st, and are the main crop. At
litis writing, they are beginning lo show
the blush and arc about the size of an
ordinary seedling peach; they grow to an
immense size, sninollmcs weighing a
pound when ripe. This orchard is four
years old, and is a sight to behold. We
tounlod as many us TOO peaches on one
ree, so judging front the size of lust
year's peaches, which wore much below
the average, a tree of this size would till
seven crates, and at tjli per crate, which
s one tblrq of the price realized last year,
would amount lo $2t per tree. Uupt.
Irby said be would lie sutistied with $1
per crate, and three crates to the tree.
Tliero are so lit ay things to write
about when you come to look into Oy-
clonota, that we w;d !--i-.o to look it up
opie by topic, when ws will give our
catlots full bcnelit of the mclltods om-
doyed in llic culllvulloii of each article.
We dbl not fully complete our tour of
Inspection nt Cyeloncui, but will finish
up another day.

it will he entirely Impracticable to pay any of
them until the General Assembly takes some ac
tion. As you are aware, the appropriation made
to cover this law is $30,000,00 which takes in only
200 elaliHK, when It Is now certain that it will re
quire a very much larger i*um. While all the
claims now on tile have not l»oen passed on, It. i*
reasonably safe to say that at least 2,000 w ill he
approved. It has been suggested that the money
in hand be paid out prorata, but there is nothing
in the law which will justify this course. It has
aluo been suggested to pay it to thrive most in
need, but a moment's thought will show that this
could not be properly done, besides every ap
proved claim will stand exactly on the same
fooilng m another. Again it has been advised
to-pay it to those whose claims were tlrst died,
when that would likely defeat the object of the
law as it would prolific for those most active, or
