FRUIT GROWERS ORGANIZE.
A Saving to Growers.
The latest thing offered to Georgia
fruit grower's is a car that needs no
refrigeration.
The cost of icing a oar is estimated
at an average of $90. With tint ears
just introduced into this section by
the Southern road all this expense is
said to go into the poekyts of tile
growers.
The ears are used for fruits shipped
from California to the Eastern mar
kets, and are proving very successful
from an economical point of view.
The Southern road claims that
these cal's have never befolt) been
used in this section.
About 1,000 to 1,200 cars of fruit
have heretofore been shipped from
this immediate vicinity, and if the
saving to the growers is $90 a car,
something like $90,000 a season will
remain in this section if these ears
arc psod exclusively.
A State Association Organised at Atlanta.
Tim fruitgrowers of (ieorgiaorgan-
iaed a State Association in Atlanta
onJTnesday of last week. The organ
ization took the name of Georgia
Krnit Growers Association.
The movement was at first started
in an effort to secure proper railroad
rates! The fruit growers were called
on to meet, at Atlanta and take some
steps toward effecting that end.
There were ov'er a hundred fruit
growers present when the meeting
wits called to order and they lost no
time in starting into the transaction
of business. Thu association was or
ganized, and John I>. Cunningham,
of Marietta, was elected President
Jas. L Sibley, of Marietta, was elept-
cd Secretary and Treasurer. The
dues of the association were fixed at
$5 a year, and all expense relative to
tho organization are to be pail in
this way.
As soon as this was done,President
Cunningham announced that lie hail
a plan that would save a vast amount
of money for the fruit growers. His
plan was to make tin arrangement
with the railroads to notify tho Wes
tern Union Telegraph Company twice
a day of all cars shjppcd and their
destination. These noticos were
then to be sent to all inembors of the
association. This would onablo all
fruit growers to know wlint cities
were supplied, and prevent crowding
of thu markets. A committee was
appointed to visit tho officers of the
telegraph company and see If such
an arrangement oould lie made.
Thu question of railroad rates and
transput tat ion was fully discussed.
The .Southern Tariff Association was
soundly roasted, and adverse legisla
tion threatened.
('apt. II, II. Tiff, of Tiftou, was
made one of the Vice-Presidents.
His large fruit interest and Ids sound
judgement will carry great weight in
the councils of tho organization.
This is n step in the right direction
and if its purposes arc carried out
will result in lasting benefit to the
fruit industry of tho country.
