The papers chronicle a curious
cuuse for amputating a negro’s arm
at Cordele. A few weeks ago a negro
named Will Fuller had a fight with
Jim Pope, who is what is termed a
blue-gum negro. During the progress
of the fight Pope bit Fuller on the
forefinger df his right hand. The
finger begun to swell at once and
the swelling soon spread to the hand
and arm. His arm was swollen with
in three inches of the shou Ider and
the poison was affecting all the
glands when the physicians amputat
ed it.
Alex W. Healer has a page write-up
of the Old Soldier’s Colony, in last
Saturday’s Atlanta Journal, It is
thorough and comprehensive, and
goes into detail of the colonyand ijs
plans. Some of the colonists who
have already come through are living
in rented houses, shanties, tents and
covered wagons, until the allotment
of tracts of land is made. Among
the most direct results will be the
building of a model city, the estab
lishment of canneries, factories and
banks, and a complete change in pol
itics of Irwin county, if not in the
Eleventh Congressional district, as it
is estimated that the colony will em
brace 8,000 voters. A singular fact
is the statement of a member of the
colony that no negro would be ad
mitted to citizenship. Only two
women have taken the overland wag
on trip.
