EDITED BY d. M. W.

Knxoma, Sept., 12.—Last Saturday
was in our opinion one of the hottest
days of the summer.
The stor,e house of Mr. J. T. Aus
tin is rapidly nearing completion and
when finished will be quite a hand
some building.
A number of our people attended
preaching at the Tumor church last
Sunday.
Jesse McMillan brought in a load
of watermelons Monday. They were
very small and sold for fie. each.
Tramps are beginning to make
their appearance in this section. Two
of the gentry passed Enigma last
Tuesday headed westward. Soon
the severe cold weather will drive
them out of the slums of the large
cities of the North and West, and
they will seek more congenial cli
mates in Georgia and Florida. This
section has no inducements or wel
come for such emigrants.
Prof. Cameron, who taught the
II rook field school last season, goes to
Macon to enter the old reliable Mer
cer University.
Rev. J. VV. Weston, of Talbotton,
(la,, preached to a large and appre
ciative congregation in the Metho
dist church last Monday night. His
theme was the life and character of
the Prophet, Daniel.
With all our musical talent, it docs
seem that somo one of the several
good musicians would organize a
choir to assist in the services at the
churches. There is nothing that
adds more to a e.liiire.li service than
good singing, and we sincerely trust
that some one will take the matter in
hand. What Hay you ilro. Sauls.
Bov. Klins Turner, of Florida, will
preach in the Baptist church here
next Sunday.
Another failure to hold prayer
meeting hero in either of the chur
ches, Sunday evening. It seems as
if our good friends of the different
churches here, arc becoming indiff
erent in regards to this matter.
L N. Reynolds and family have
moved to Brookfield. We exceed
ingly regret to lose them from our
midst, but cbeei fully commend them
to the good people of Brookfield.
To-day they stand pre-eminently
the peers of any men in all the re
gion round about here. We mean
l)r. Hammond and Henry Hayes, us
rat and mice catchers. They set a
a trap in Weston tfc Gunn’s barn Sun
day night and caught eleven, and
the next night eaged thirteen. Henry
says UK not good weather for rats
either.
In conversation with Bov. W. F.
Ilixon a few days since, he informed
your reporter that at our licit regu
lar appointment, the fourth Sunday,
ho would protruct the meeting. He
also says the Bev. Thundeiburg, of
Willaeoochoe, would brobably be
with uh.

Saturday, while in that city, we were
bowling briskly along towards their
mammoth store, thinking ourselves
unknown and unnoticed, when, just
as we entered the door, that imp of
mischief of a bird sung ont at tbe
top of his, her or its voice: “Hello,
Cracker I” and there were lots of peo
ple on tbe streets, too.
Tifton is truly on a boom of gi
gantic proportions. We were sur
prised beyond utterance upon alight
ing from the B. tfe W. train last Sat
urday at the rapid transformation.
Only about six weeks since, while
there, not a hammer, the buzz of a
saw or the click of a trowel was
beard. Now the scone is entirely
changed. Handsome brick buildings
are being reared on every band, while
scores of workmen are hurrying
hither and thither in their several
avocations. Tifton’s star of prosper
ity is indeed in the ascendancy, and
is rising grandly and surely, higher
and higher. Other towns in South
Georgia have styled themselves the
“Metropolis,” but now that the me
tropolis is Tifton, for a certainty, let
us all doff our hats to the proud lit
tle city and her wide-awake, enter
prising people.
George Aikin, a burly black negro,
made a most brutal assault upon Will
Fleming, better known ns T’olly, last
Monday, inflicting a severe knife 1
wound in Fleming’s side. From the
most authentic information obtaina-1
ble, the assault was entirely unpro- J
voked. Polly is a small, inoffensive, j Corng and B „ Skin Eniptlongi and pogi

bnt will rest it here and drop over in
Coffee county (still is the Brusbey
Creek country) and say that Lige and
the 2-Tom Paulks, Oscar Paulk,
Aaron Metts, Rev. John Vickers, B.
F. Summerlin all in and around
Willacoochee, are all fine farmers.
Ror. John Vickers has the finest
fish pond in this part of Georgia.
When I was at his house two weeks
ago he had over one thousand bush
els of pears on his trees which are
the very finest I ever saw.
There is a very fatal disease, among
the children, now raging in Worth
county, in the Joe L. Sumner neigh
borhood.
The cotton crop is now being car
ried to market pretty rapidly. J. T.
McLendon, of Ashburn, has about all
that he can do ginning the fleecy
staple. It is selling very readily at
7|c. in Ashburn.
Mr. Williams, the vigilant Marshal
of Sycamore, was telling us last eve
ning that J. 13. Gordy, of Ashburn,
had a bushel of gold to buy cotton
with.
The Gazekte is getting to bo one
of the newsiest papers that comes to
Irwin county. It is published on
Friday and almost allways gets to its
readers the samo day.

In passing through Tifton, two or
