THE GAZETTE: TIFTOH, GA.. FRIDA £, OCTOBER 11, 1895.
CORRESPONDENCE.
Enigma Department.
EDITED 1!V G. M. TV.
Enigma, October 9.—Miss Haile
dismissed school last Friday to al
low all of her pupils who desired to
do so, to attend the closiug exercises
of Mr. E. McMillan’s school.
Farmers heieabouts are busily en
gaged in housing the 1S95 corn crop.
It is a good one.
We have been lightly touched with
the icy Ungers of winter. The festial
mosquito will please take a back seat.
Itev. Cox filled his regular appoint
ment here, preaching Saturday night;
.Sunday a. m. and p. in. Ills service
Saturday night was especially inter
esting, his theme being, “Malice in
the human heart, one toward an
other.”
J. T. Austin has opened up a stock
of groceries in. his new store.
Coon hunting is the latest fad
here among the boys, and people
who have cane patches had better
look sharp. We’ve been there and
know whereof we speak.
The devotees of Terpsicore, tripped
the light fantastic last Friday even
ing at Mr. P. G. Easters new resi
dence. Those present report a pleas-*
ant time. It is sAl that—
‘■For to cure the fidgets ami bile,
- The fiddle is better than castor—.”
Messrs. Reynolds, Pattison art!
McWhtte of the Brookfield neighbor
hood attended preaching here Sun
day.
Severe colds are prevalent here,
and many hard blows are bestowed on
innocent noses.
Tom Johnson says, the next time
a dog trees a coon in Mill creek
swamp be cun just bark his head off,
lie is not going in there. Tom was
in there a few nights since.
A tal', lean, lank, miserable look
ing, though good natured negro was
here Saturday night to take the can
non hall for Ashburn, with about as
hard a chill on him as you would
wish to see, and informed your cor
respondent that he had been having
them for three months, and could
find no relief. “Kin yer tell me boss,
what’l stop dcse here chills,” but we
merely referred him to our M. D’s.
who arc way up on such things.
Ethel, is the name of a new and
very pretty song, rendered for the
first time in Sunday school, Sunday
afternoon. The words were com
posed by Dr. J. H. Hammond and
music by Mr. C. D. Sauls.
Mr. G. I. Jones of Alapaha has ac
cepted a position with Weston &
Gunn, and with his family has
moved to Enigma. Glad to welcome
them among us.
> Jno. Smith and Tom Johnson,
came into Enigma Tuesday after
noon loaded down with fish. They
went out to the river Monday night
and caught an even hundred.
Mr. E. McMillan’s school near
here, closed last Friday, with speech-
making and a thorough examination
of the entire school. Your corres
pondent exceedingly regrets, that
Owing to a misunderstanding of the
date, he was not present. Everyone
present witli whom we have cor.-
versed upon the subject, says the ex
amination was a most creditable quo,
and speaks loudly in praise of Mr.
McMillan, the teacher. The affair
was one of those old-time occasions,
we remember with so much pleasure.
A general commingling of neighbors
aud friends, hearty and honest hand
shakes crowned with a dinner on ( lie
ground, fit for kings; every body
made to feel welcome; free from all
of the stiff formalities of the present
day. How refreshing, soul-inspiring,
It must have been to be there, noth
ing, however small, occurring to mar
the pleasure of anyone. Honest good
eer, reigned supreme throughout
he day; and record it in letters' of
hurnislud gold, to the credit of the
young men of this section, there was
not a drunken man there. We sin
cerely congratulate Mr. McMillan
upon the successful termination of a
most successful school, and we as
sure otir friends out there, although
we could not be with them in person,
our heart and sentiments are always
with them upon all such occasions.
Milltown Mention.
Mili.tqwx, October 8.—We are
having some fine weather for picking
cotton this week.
The Milltown school continues to
boom.
Air. Luther Liles is wearing a
broad smile. It’s another girl.
It seems that one ol our best!
young men is very fond of Flowers,;
or of one peculiar kind anyway.

Miss Celia Sloan has returned
from an extended visit to her sister

A literary and debating society
has been organized in the school at
this place. Much interest is being
taken by the young folks.
Mr. .T. S. Brown has resigned his
position as postmaster at this place.
Mr. C. Strickland lias put in applica
tion, for the position.
We don’t know of a place, where
a good wheel wright and blacksmith
is needed any worse, than in Mill-
town .
Mrs. ITartridge Guldens is danger
ously ill at her mother’s, Mrs. W. IT.
Berryliill. She is being attended by
Dr. W. L. Patten.
Dr. J V. Tally of Stockton, was
in the village Sunday. He has just
returned trom Louisville Ivy., where
he lias been spending a few days
with Mrs. Tally. He smiles serenely
upon all inquiring friends, and says
its a hoy.
Prof. J. W. StClair of Whigham,
is spending the week with his bosom
friend, Rev. T. Edson. They have
been enjoying fishing in the Banks
pond.
Quite a number of Milltowners
contemplate going to the Internation
al Cotton States Exposition. Your
correspondent is among the number.
Mr. D. Sauls one of our most
worthy farmers was summoned to
the bedside of a dying brother last
week, lie arrived at his brother’s
home, just one hour and a half after
his death. «
We feel under many obligations to
the Milltown News, a newsy little
sheet issued by the pupils of the
Milltown school for assisting us in
getting up this communication. The
hoys and girls of the Milltown school
arc hustlers, and hound to make
their mark “wind and weather favor

Items from Clinch.
Some of your readers may he sur
prised, to learn that the Gazette is
read weekly in old Clinch. Though
Clinch borders the Okefinokeej
swamp, her people are energetic and!
well up, morally, religiously and fi
nancially. Clinch county contains
some of the richest soil in Georgia,
The same is equal to valley land, as
the greater portion of it is low and
level. Some of our neighboring
counties may think that Clinch is;
too low for anything. But not go,;
brother, our farmers make the finest
corn crops in the state, and plenty of
long cotton, pinders, chtifas etc., arid
plenty of hogs and cattle. Every
year, people from Codec and other
counties come here to buy meat hogs.
We see several counties inviting
emigrants to come and settle up
their wild lands, hut not so with
Clinch. All that is not cultivated of
her soil, is good pasturage for hogs
and cattle. So the wheel of prosperi
ty is continually rolling in old Clinch.
She has harvested this year, plenty
of provisions to lust two years with
out planting anything next year.
J. A. Osteen & Co., have not or
dered any hay or. corn, since the first
of September, and they say that
they are not expecting to, before
January. They are largo turpentine
operators, and keep a lot of 'mules
aud horses on hand. The country
around here supplies them with all
the corn they need at seventy-live
cents per bushel, and hay at seventy-
five cents per hundred.
Politics and hardtiines are not I
known hero, neither is third party.
Success to the Gazette. Den nis.
