The highways and byways lead
ing to Tifton show signs of much
travel. The great variety of goods
and low prices, together with the
high price paid for cotton and other
country products, is the explanation.
Rev. R. Bcrryhil! was bitten on

Tifton’s clever hardware man S.
G. Slack, is not the enthusiastic cyc
list that he once was. Early Mon
day morning he started for Nashville
on his wheel. About two miles from
town said wheel was demolished ,and
Mr. Slack returned home, procured a
new wheel and made a new start.
He reached Nahville all right but on
the return trip punctured a tire soon
after starting, and had to cart the
cripple wheel home.
A Lively Runaway.
1
On Friday evening last, just before
dark, while Mr. Perry, of Sibley &
Co., was speeding his horse down, the
tram road, this side of Mr., Tobe
McRae’s, the animal became unman
ageable and dashed at full speed
across the little stream. In trying
to make a short turn in the road the
buggy struck a pine tree, throwing
Mr. Perry on his head and rendering
him unconscious for a few moments.
In the meantime Mrs. Wilson, with
her little sister, who had been visit
ing Mrs. McCrea, was coming down
the hill, right in the face of the run
away steed, and seeing the danger,
she turned her horse out of the road
to allow the runaway to pass, but in
stead of his keeping the road, after
dumping his driver, lie dashed for
Mrs. Wilson’s mule and wagon, over
turning the wagon body and throw
ing the occupants to the ground. On
he went, pulling up at the Mcltea
residence. Mr.McRea, thinking some-1
thing serious had happened, jumped
into the buggy and started to drive
rapidly back to where the accident
occurred. The horse resented the
liberty he was taking with him by
running away and throwing him out.
The steed, seemingly not, satisfied
with the partial demolition of the
wagon, dashed back over the same
route and finished the work lie had
begun on the outward trip, by com
pletely wrecking the wagon, which,
by the way, was a now one. Strange
to say, tho runaway team was un
harmed, and the parties involved,who
had such a thrilling experience, we
are glad to say, caine off with slight
injuries.
The O.hl Soldier’s Colony.
The Old Soldiers Colony of which
you have heard so much, is no longer
a “shall lie.” The lands are paid for,
an army of surveyors is dividing the
lands, 5000 people are on their way,
and within three months the largest
city in southern Georgia will stand,
where six months ago the wild
“Buck” ran unmolested and the na
tive pines and wiregrsss stood in all
their splendor. This is the result of
the active straight-forward, conserva
tive dealings of the Georgia Imigra-
tion and Investment Bureau. If you
want lands for any purpose in south
ern Georgia, you should consult M.
J. Kent, at Tifton, or Hon. W. J.
Northen, Atlanta, Ga.
Row at a Festival.
At a negro festival at Unionville,
a village about one mile south of
Tifton, lust Saturday night, a num
ber of those present became involved
in a row, in which razors, knives,
revolvers and Winchesters were free
ly used. Three or four participants
were badly wounded, together with
several innocent parties who were in
a room adjoining that in which the
fight took place. One of these had
his left leg punctured by a Winches
ter bullet and came near bleeding to
death. Quite a number of arrests
have been made on warrants sworn
out by some of the leading colored
people of that village. They are de
termined to put a stop to such law
lessness, cost what it may. This is
a commendable course, and will suc
ceed.
